Three times, on 102 to 109 degree F days, after stopping engine to eat or refuel, 24 foot long RV with 2008 Dodge sprinter turbo diesel and 12 - 16 K miles on it would 1) only run at idle (no response to stepping on the fuel pedal), and 2) would not shift down from D to lower gears (although the dash display showed the lower gears). As a result I had almost no power and could only move at a speed of about 5 miles per hour. Each time, drove the RV slowly around the large parking lot a few times until the engine eventually regained proper control and functioning. Any thoughts on what is going on, or how else to treat this?

Sounds vaguely similar to our issue with our Country Coach. We would lose all power at random moments, and on grades (gulp) lose our jake brake and the coach would not shift from 4th gear. We are hoping it is the speed sensors that we just had replaced but I guess we'll find out for certain when we pick up the coach and drive home from Oregon next month.

I would check for stored codes. Did the check engine light go on when the power was low? Silverleaf sells a VMSpv unit that works with many diesel chassis. You could check to see if it works on yours.

I have a 3500 Dodge Sprinter. Still under warranty, just trying to reduce fishing by the tech.

Hot soak , conditions , particularly if they don't throw any codes, can be a nightmare to track down. Because you have engine and trans control issues, you need to find a common link. It could be as simple as the firewall, bulkhead connector, wiring pins that get a poor connection at high temps; or if the engine/trans share a common controller, connections there. Worse case internal controller, soft ware programing, then your going to end up at a dealer.
Can you back up, at all ? Have you tried just letting the unit idle ? If you've had the coach checked and there are no codes, then the next time the problem occours try disconnecting the battery for 2 min. be ready for the alarm to go off when you hook it back up. Then see if the coach can be driven normally. Good luck , when it comes to tracking electronic/electrical problems I'd rather be lucky than good!
