Lost Power This Morning

I was leaving for Forest City this morning because I had a 7 AM appointment at Winnebago for some LP tank repairs. The Horizon was going along smoothly and I remarked to my DW how great the day was going to be. About 25 miles from home I lost most of my power. I checked the warning panel for any lights and I had none. I pilled over to the side of the road and shut the engine down. I let it sit for a minute and restarted the engine. No improvement or warning lights. I started back for home and I noticed my turbo charger was not showing any pressure. I could get about 35 or 40 MPH on the level. Once on my return I felt a power surge and I saw the turbo was working. It shut back down and I lost power again. It is in the shop right now and I am waiting to hear back from them. I am sure the problem is related to the Turbo.

Has any one else had a problem like this? What are your thoughts? I will post the results and solution to this problem in this thread.

Don

Crappy luck, Don . Sorry you had a problem but it does sound like your turbo is done. Will be anxious to hear the outcome.

Yes, had the same problem. Turned out to be a turbo control module. Doesn't appear to be an uncommon failure. Don't know what the cost was as it still covered under my Cummis warranty.

Check for air leaks before going further.

You blowing smoke or do you have emissions on that engine? I would say issue with turbo and get in to dealer asap.

Had same thing happen to my Vectra (Horizon is same Itasca name). Discovered a 4.5 inch hose clamp had broken and allowed the Turbo hose to slip off Turbo housing. Freightliner carries these special clamps.

Just an update. I received a call from the shop this morning. There were no codes to be read. At first they thought it was a sticking air control valve on the turbo. They freed up the valve and tested it. Still low power. Put mechanical gage on the turbo and it was working even though the gage showed no pressure. They determined it to be a failed turbo sensor. This sensor supplies the data to the gage and tells the engine computer the turbo is working. Therefor the gage showed no pressure and the computer put the engine in limp mode because the computer was told the turbo was not working. They found the needed part in Green Bay. It will be shipped today and will be installed on Monday. Hopefully we will be able to test it later on Monday. I will post a final up date after we are sure all is well.

Thanks for all you suggestions. What makes this site so invaluable is we all learn from each other.

Thanks;
Don

Well I picked up our Horizon. She runs like a charm again. They had it diagnosed correctly. The Cummins part number for the Turbo Sensor is 498593 in case anyone has the same problem.
I am a happy camper again.

Glad to hear the problem is resolved. Seems that the turbo is pretty reliable. Most of the problems when i not getting the turbo boost seem to be due to sensors & control supporting the turbo. Hope it stays that way since the turbos are pricy. Enjoy your travels
