First, welcome to the Forums. You will find a lot of good info here. As to your inquiry, I would have no hesitation on buying a coach with a Mercedes power plant. I have not owned one, but with their reputation for building dependable vehicles, I would call it a safe bet. I have seen many box vans running around Los Angeles with the Mercedes logo on the front, and in Europe they are everywhere. I am assumeing you are talking about a diesel rig, and they have a lot of experience with them.
And since they merged with Chrysler, getting parts should be no problem. Good luck, let us know what you decide.

There's a few on the Tiffin RV Network that have opted for the Mercedes over the Cat on the Phaeton. It's a no charge option. They all love them and state that they have more power than the Cat (the torque is 25% greater). They "expect" to see better fuel mileage but they haven't had them long enough to state that with fact yet. It'll be another month until those reports come in.

I had to have my company car towed a couple of weeks ago after the fuel pump went out. The tow truck driver that towed me was driving a newer diesel powered flat bed. I engaged him in conversation, and he said the truck had a Mercedes engine. He said he preferred his older truck which had a Cat. He said the Cat had more torque to haul heavier loads.
His 2 cents for whatever it's worth...

There are some big Cats and small MB engines. It's pretty tough to say what the match was in the tow trucks. But, the Cat most used in RVs is the little C7 with 860 ft-lbs of torque. The MB that is used in the Freightliner XC stacks up pretty favorably against it, powerwise. Replace that with a C9 or C11 and the numbers will change.

Mercedes engines are dogs, and suck fuel. Truckers hate them. You can't do better then Cat or Cummins.... IMveryHO.

I have had quite a few of the Mercedes MBE4000 450 HP. The quietest, smoothest engine I have seen. Plenty of power at 1550 torque. I had one motorhome with the MBE 900 with 1000 torque, also plenty of power.

We have the Mercedes MBE4000 and love it. Lots of power and torque, our best MPG is around 12. Been a great engine and it sips fuel, my small cummings for work is a PIG on fuel... By the way a lot of truckers are going towards the Mercedes engine, quieter and stronger.

I've since heard from the service techs at Tiffin Motorhomes. They claim that most owners love the extra torque and are getting a tad over 11 MPG in 40' Phaetons.
However, they've only been out there a few months so this is very preliminary information.
