Should this be attached to the muffler?

Yes , the clamp should be tight around the pipe .
Does the lower half have enough length to reach up to the bolt ?
Is the backside of the pipe next to, or attached to a hanger?

Exhaust system part to the right of the picture is your DPF ( Diesel Particulate Filter).

I will check today. When I noticed this I was spraying poison for spiders and I did not want to be around the poison to long.

Here are two more pictures showing the bracket. I want to make sure I don't loosen up any other connections while moving the muffler into the bracket.

Assembly line up , the clamp and hanger are where they should be , bend the clamp together and install the bolt and tighten.

What I just noticed , is that there are marks visible, on the pipe, where the clamp was properly installed at one time on the pipe. Black arrow.

Has there been any work done on the DPF ?

Not that I know of. I have only driven it about 500 miles. We will be taking a 5 week 2600 mile trip in a few weeks. I did get the bracket installed with another longer bolt.
