New Jeep JL alternator, 240 amp vs my old CAT 160 amp, wow.

Gang,
This isn't earth shattering news or, anything to go crazy about. It just so happened that we had a Jeep JK recall to get handled at our local dealer yesterday and, while the Jeep was being worked on by the tech, I was in the showroom drooling all over myself while sitting in a new JL Rubicon 4-door. Man, what a nice unit. Contrast color sewed leather seats, darker blue metallic paint, and a whole host of other improvements/changes over our '15 JKUR. But, while looking at the window sticker, I noticed it supposedly has a 240 amp alternator, WOW!

I immediately thought, huh!!!!!!!!!!!! My CAT in our '04 Horizon 36GD has a 160 amp unit. Man, a seriously larger alternator in this Jeep, which has what I would surmise, a way lesser duty than the alternator in our coach, but, is considerably larger in amperage. And, this Jeep had the smaller, 2.0L turbo 4-cyl engine. And guess what, they charge a $1,000 more for that smaller engine, how about that?

Anyway, just thought I'd kind-a throw that out there. A larger alternator in a Jeep than I have in our 36' diesel coach. Hmmm.
Scott

The electronic fuel management and turbocharger wastegate management system on that engine requires significant power.

I have no personal proof but, I've been lead to believe that the new JLs, regardless of the engine option, DO shut down at intersections while waiting to accelerate after the light turns green. Well, out here in the heat of Lake Havasu City AZ, in the June through Sept months, that wouldn't cut it with us. I'm not sure you can disable that function but, I'd sure as heck find out before I signed the dotted line.

JL auto stop/start

Yes they all have the auto start/stop. You cannot permanently disable this function. You can turn it off for your trip but if next time you start the engine it turns back on. You have to manually turn it off every time. Sort of a bummer.

We had that auto start on 2015 Mini Cooper. Didn't notice it that much on occasional stops. Would shut it off in a lot of stop and go. Same deal went to drfault every time it was shut off.
