Being a life-long gas rig driver, I'm now in the awkward position of learning EVERYTHING, very late in life, about my new-to-me DP. As a DIY, one puzzle is whether I need to buy my filters and belts from Cummins or Freightliner shops, or is it something I can get quality stuff cheaper by ordering on line? Where're you getting your stuff?

Thanx

I've made a personal decision to stick with OEM filters (my rig has a CAT). In my area, I've gotten the best pricing from the local Freightliner dealer parts dept. There are online resources but after you pay the shipping, the final costs are the same.

RVChassisParts.com is an online source for all OEM filters, belts, and a few other things.

I would recommend staying with OEM replacements, as peace of mind outweighs any savings.

Filters are available at a discount from Spartan, Cummins, Onan, and possibly Cat, and Freightliner at the larger RV rallies.

I find my local NAPA parts store to be competitively priced and I don't bother to order online any more. And if they don't have the filter I need, they get it overnight. This is a large store with a good retail business as well a shops, so they apparently keep their prices lean. I've heard others say their NAPA store is expensive, so your mileage may vary.

If you join the Cummins Power Club, you get a 10$ discount on Cummins and Onan parts and usually labor too. The Club is $20/year, so that reduces the value of the discount if you only buy a few filters annually.

Dallas Cummins Southern Plains has my Fleetgard engine oil filter for $10.79. A Wix version of that filter at my local O'Reilly is $15.99. I found similar savings on Onan parts for my genset. The local auto parts stores want more for non OEM parts.

For oil, Freightliner has occasional specials on Rotella but most of the time Wally's has the best price. I do have to watch - my local Wal-Mart goes out of stock on it and won't get more for 6-8 weeks.

I'll second the NAPA store. Have a friend that runs 60+ Cummins engines in his trucks and strictly uses NAPA.

I have used Wix filters from O'Reilly on Cat and Cummins powered rigs with no problems for quite some time. Sometimes I use the NAPA filters too.

BTW, Wix also makes air filters for most Diesel rigs too. But most of the time you have to get your O'Reilly store to order it for you.
