For those of you who can measure your oil pressure what is the number you see??

I am using Trip-Tek and most often I see 27 to 30 lbs sometimes a little lower.
Engine Temp bout 190o and Transmission(transynd) no tow bout 145o
It will be good to see what your engines do. Thanks

Same engine, same year, same engine and transmission temps, but I usually read 40 psi when cruising at 1750 rpm. Was your reading at idle or cruise?

ichn2go,

I have a 2006 Ellipse 40FD with a CAT 350 C7 and Allison MH3000. I pull a Mini Cooper - about 2500#. I have a TripTech also.

As Flyer says - it will depend a lot on your RPM and sometime temperature and load.

Under normal conditions - level road - I see oil pressure (op) at about 39 - 40psi with 1750 RPM doing about 65 mph. Engine temp is normally around 188 to 190. Under load - pulling a grade the RPM naturally gets down and the op will get down to about 31 - 33. If the RPM is down low enough I will down shift so I can get the RPM back up to around 1800 and the op back up to around 35. Engine temp usually stays right at 190.

When we are in heavy traffic and stop and go stuff the op will get down to 29 - 30 at idle and temp will climb to about 192.

This is a good thread to start because I have always been curious if my engine readings are "normal" for everyone else.

The first time I had the TripTech and was pulling a steep grade the op got down to 32. All I could remember was the tech telling me at PDI that the engine would not start until there was 30psi. Then all I could think about was wondering if the engine would shut down if the op got below 30psi. Remember - I was pullling up the Cajon Pass on I15 in California - 5 lanes of traffic - lots of cars going 75 - 80 - lots of trucks trying to do 60 up the grade right along with me - what do I do - where do I go if the engine shuts down right now

Thanks to the TripTech and reading posts here I have learned to deal with it and keep the engine from working to hard.

Good thread.

Hi All,
For us, just after an oil change, oil pressure runs 50 PSI hot. Cold pressure can be as high as 80+ PSI. After the oil has about 1000 miles on it, the pressure drops gradually to 40 PSI. RPM and load dependent, as the injectors bleed off oil pressure as the load goes up. 1800 RPM coasting down hill the pressure will usually be around 43 PSI. 1800 RPM going up the same hill at full power will yield around 38 PSI. Engine temperature is well controlled between 198 and 204 degrees under all conditions. All of these readings come direct from the CAT ECU with the CAT PocketTech. Our engine is the 350HP CAT C7.

Just gave Caterpiller a call and my motor #.
At the factory the engine when running at 2400RPM ran 40 lbs and at 700RPM it had 21 lbs oil pressure.
I asked if at any RPM, it ran between 21 and 40 lbs pressure if that was ok? Their answer was that is fine.
So I guess all is fine...Thanks for all your help.JIM

With the CAT C7 you do not have to be concerned with oil pressure. The engine uses oil pressure to operate the fuel injection and will shut down if the oil pressure is to low.
It is self protecting.

I don't know about other CAT engines.

When I had my oil changed at a CAT dealer the service manager told me that changing oil per their table was critical since the oil pressure runs many of the accessories.

A pretty good reason to keep it changed.

Joe T, I think you are absolutely correct. The 3126 has that feature also. In driving it today it read 12 at idle and 28 at 1750 RPM. Seems low but I'll get it checked in Gaffney.

Chippy , the oil has been changed by the book.
Only have less than 15000 miles been changed 3 times as I have been going by the 6 month rule..\Thanks to you both

The CAT guy and my book says every 11,000 miles or annually. At $285 a pop, I'll go the 11,000.

I don't remember exactly, but I think my pressure was running between 30 and 40. The guage was in the good zone and the trip-tek confirmed that but I don't remember the figures.
