Has anyone changed the small inline power steering filter? I can't find a number for it or on it.
Thanks
Bill

I don't have a filter on my PS system. If you sign up for Access Freighliner, a free "view" of the same parts information that a Freightliner dealer will get, it might give you the number for that filter. Access Freighliner provides chassis serial number specific parts information. It is,unfortunately, a very ugly application to use but the kind of information that you are looking for should be in it. Alternatively, you might call FCC, go to the MH tech support line and get them to look it up for you. They are very easy people to work with.

Diveman52, before you change the power steering filter you may want to check into this recall.

Thanks for the recall information.
I think I'll give them a call
I'm also considering changing it to a spin on type which would also be a lot larger.

Please share your information on a spin on type filter as I would prefer to install one of those also.

Okay after some research here's what I have ordered.
Filter mount Wix # 24766
This is a Wix filter # 51612

Part Number: 51612
UPC Number: 765809516120
Principal Application: Power Steering on IHC Trucks
All Applications
Style: Spin-On Lube Filter
Service: Power Steering
Type: Full Flow
Media: Paper
Height: 4.338
Outer Diameter Top: 3.660
Outer Diameter Bottom: Closed
Thread Size: 13/16-16
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 7-9
Nominal Micron Rating: 30

Gasket Diameters
Number O.D. I.D. Thk.
Attached 2.834 2.462 0.200

You can go to Wix site and type in the number
http://www.wixfilters.com/prod...formation/index.html

I think it will be a pretty simple retrofit.

Thank you diveman52. All your information is very useful to me as I hate to take my motorhome to freightliner unless I really have to. As of yet I have not done their recall because it seems like every time I go there they keep the rig for a couple of weeks. I would much rather do the job myself and end up with a more usable filter system.

I agree with you, Eddie, that Access Freightliner is one of the ugliest applications that I've ever attempted to use. It is no wonder that everyone has problems. As a builder and designer of software applications myself, I can tell you that about every rule for application development that I know about was violated in that one.

That said, it isn't impossible:
1. Nothing but Parts Pro works for individual owners like you and I. Don't even try the others
2. After you enter your chassis ID (the last 6 digits of your VIN), you press the "retrieve design group" button. To simulate the OP's situation, I selected "Steering".
3. You then select from the sub group list presented. I double clicked on "Steering plumbing" and it shows me the tank, hoses and fittings for the power steering fluid system. The part numbers for the ones shown are to the right of right side list

There are MANY limitations. For my chassis, many of the sub-groups are "stubbed out" meaning that the application was changed but you are still navigated to where the old information was linked in. The diagrams are incomplete. For my coolant system hoses, all of the ones leading to the surge tank were left off and I had to contact Freightliner directly to get the diameters and lengths. In several cases, going back and forth among the diagrams just didn't get me to the part I was looking for.

Difficult to use? Absolutely! Impossible....not quite - most of the time.

Charlie

I ordered the filter and mount from www.filter1.com.
You have to set up and account with them which may take a few days.
Best bet would be a NAPA auto parts store. Or a local independent auto parts store.

Thanks Bill, I went online last night and was able to order that setup you described from Woody's Auto Supply. I will be fabing a mounting bracket and installing it this weekend.

Where is the filter located? And where if the power steering fluid located?
I've been all over the coach and I can't see/find it.

I don't know about your coach but on mine the power steering reservoir is located in the back above the radiator. the filter was located below it in the return line. from what I understand not all coaches have a filter in the system.
