mking- Jim's comments on the VDU (VDC) may be valid. I had intermittent problems, speedometer or gauges would oscillate or drop to zero w/o affecting any system. Almost always cleared following next rest stop or restart. (Computer reset?)
Resolved my problem by cleaning connections at the VDC and sealing the plugs with dielectric compound. (Pins bend easily so use care)

Here's a link to the article Jim posted, includes the images. http://www.discoveryowners.com/vdcrepair.pdf
(hopefully your new VDU won't have solder problems)

Good info. I will check the plugs on the VDU and spray with a contact cleaner I got at the FMAC rally. I have the old VDU and can follow the instructions to see what I think about it's solder joints.

mKing, I missed the point that you have already replaced the VDU. Getting another bad one is a possibility, though unlikely. Over-torquing the mounting bolts is a possibility. You could try a repair on your old VDU and use it for a while. Sorry for all the bad luck. You should have been good to go long ago. They replaced my VDU at Gaffney years ago an I have never had any more problems.

When getting your parts,if you are still looking for a used one, stay away from the guy with the salvage yard in either Indiana or Illinois. I ordered a couple of parts from him when I was redoing a couple of things in my steps and what he sent me was in worse condition than the ones I already had.He wouldn't replace them with better ones because he said that I'd probably send him my old ones instead.

Thanks for the alert on salvage yards. Haven't found used one yet.

Rear Air Guage

I am attempting to discover what trucks of my era used this same guage. Then I could have more diverse opportunities to find a good used one.
