Maybe someone can tell me what this is.

A friend of mine is looking at purchasing a Dynamax Super C motorhome on a Freightliner chassis. Included within the specification is the following item:

Regeneration: Engine after treatment device, automatic over the road regeneration and dash mounted request switch

Its separate from the compression and jake braking.

Does anyone know what the regeneration means?

Just curious.

Thanks

W8RLM - Bob

Hi Bob,
It sounds like the diesel engine is the newer kind that has the polution controls mandated for 2007 and later vehicles. As best I can explain, the polution filter will become full, over time. The filter is cleaned by a regenerating process. This process requires the filter temperature to be raised to burn off the contamination that has gathered on the filter. The regeneration should be automatic, requiring no owner involvement.

The regeneration process is as described above with a few additions. Several of the new Cummins engines have a multiple "trigger" program that will set off the regen mode for more than one reason. High exhaust backpressure, high EGT readings from the pre dpf sensor or timed regen. The regen process also involves the discharge of fuel into the DPF under a high EGT's that will ignite a burnoff. This extra fuel dump does affect your overall mileage. Unfortunately, unless you plan on using your coach strictly "off road" removal of these units and programming restrictions violates federal law.
