I'm considering purchasing a 2005 pre-owned Fleetwood Providence with a 350HP Freightliner Chassis, with 19K miles. What would be the next service interval, and what would it entail?

Craig, the answer is: it depends.

The typical interval for diesel engine oil changes is 15,000 miles but it is also based on time - a year. My air filter is replaced based on a vacuum gauge, not necessarily on timing. The generator oil change interval is typically 100 hours for diesels. On my Freightliner, there are 24,000 mile intervals for power steering fluid replacement, air dryer (brakes) cannister replacement, differential and transmission oil replacements and there is always the standard zert lubrication of the front end and especially the drive line. It will depend on when those later two were done last. In addition, there are about 10 different inspections for air compressor, starter, fuel tank, etc. that will be dependent on the last time they were done but are typically about every 6 months.

I do all of the above myself and am a fanatic about doing them on a timely basis because I want to do everything possible to avoid a breakdown on the road.

Craig, the following link connects you to Freightliner's "Know Your Chassis" which pretty well lays it all out for you.

Craig,

The Know Your Chassis link is a good start.
You didn't mention if the service records for the coach were with it or available. If you don't get them you have to make a decision as to whether the previous owner did all the recommended service up to the 19,000 mile point or he did not.

I would definitely ask for the service records if you have not already.

Ron

Thanks for the help. I bought the Providence last night...below is a photo taken at the dealer. I've asked them to take care of a few items before I take delivery, so I haven't brought it home yet.

What tips can you folks give me that might not be in "Know Your Chassis", such as fuel additives and such? As I said, this is my first diesel.

Real nice rig P. we almost bought an 06 39J, loved the coach. If it was me I'd do an oil change and chassis lube, also have the dealer check and if needed adjust the ride height. Best of luck with the new rig.

I would definitely start with the basics (assuming these have not been done recently):

Engine oil and filter - minimum annualy / 15k miles max
Fuel/water separator - annualy
Fuel filter(s) - annually
Drive line lube - 6 months

Then move into what your manuals state for peridoic maintenance:

Transmission - 3 years if Trans-synd synthetic
Brake Air dryer (dessicant and coalescent filters) - most likely 3 yrs (earlier ones were 18 months)
Air filter - 2 years (they can disintegrate over time)

Every few months - drain air system ping tanks (lanyards located behind RF wheel (on my coach)

Every trip - check air pressure in tires. Primary reason for tire blow outs is under pressure. Invest in a good tire gague and use it every trip.

I am a believer in preventive maintenance.

Hope this helps and happy travels!
