On a recent trip while pulling a small grade, I heard a loud pop from the engine compartment and a sudden loss of power. Lucky I was near the off ramp to our destination campground and was able to "slowly" get to our destination. After several phone calls to Freightliner Tech Spt, I was able to authorization for on-site repair from the local Freightliner svc center.

Before completing the phone calls, I crawled underneath our rig and sure enough the rubber hose connection between the supercharger and the air filter had detached/come off. So I checked the vacuum gauge to determine if the air filter needed changing and discovered the air filter was fine according to this gauge.

The clamp that holds the rubber hose to the supercharger housing has a spring to prevent the nut from coming loose. So when the Freightliner tech told me that the cause of the problem was that the clamp came loose, I got a little suspicous. Hence, this question. Why would the hose detach from the housing if the air filter is OK and the clamp nut has not come loose?

The same exact thing happened to my son in his Ford truck. He was told that the hose had to be replaced as no matter how they clamped it, it would not stay on. I am not sure if they were telling the truth about the hose or not, but it hasn't come loose since.
