Tire Pressure Issue with Freightliner Chassis

Last friday I went to check the tire pressure of my coach and encountered an issue. When I went to check the pressure in the right rear inner tire as soon as I connected the pressure gauge all I got was a hiss and inability to read the pressure. The third time I tried to check the pressure the valve core stuck open and I lost all the air. There was one unusual thing on that tire. There is a rubber grommet that fits over the end of the valve stem extender that had works it's way out of it's slot allowing the extender to flop around. A call to Freightliner and they had a tire crew out to my coach on Saturday. What had happened is the extender had so much wiggle room it actually flopped around enough to wear a hole in it. The hole was allowing the air to escape when I checked the tire pressure and also the rough edge is what caused the valve core to stick. There was a second valve core in the rim's valve stem so I wasn't losing air going down the road just when I would push the valve stem in. May I suggest we all add a quick check of that rubber grommet as part of our pre-ride checklist. It's only on the valve stems for the two inner rear tire.

Good info, Thanks. May wish to try one piece valve stems from: Your Tire Shop

The tire shop that did the repair installed a one piece valve stem. After thinking about that if the same thing had happened with the single valve stem the tire would have lost pressure if the stem became compromised. I'm gonna talk to freightliner about the repair job. I will definitely add the grommet to my trip walk around checks.
