My Freightliner has an Allison 5 speed tranny. It does NOT have readout capabilities on the shifter buttons like the 6 speeds. Its a standard shift lever. So I have to check the fluid level by the dipstick. When the engine is running (hot check) I cannot find the level on the stick, it is completely covered with oil. When I try to check it cold, by running it thru the gears to insure the convertor is full, I pretty much get the same effect. Has anyone found a better way to accurately check the fluid level?

Since nobody has responded to this I will take a stab at it.

First off I would think your tranny fluid would be clear enough to see thru. I doubt it should be as opaque as engine oil is prior to an oil change. Perhaps a filter and fluid change is in order.

Regarding the level...I don't know if this would work, but; Try placing a finger at the point of the top of the fluid on the dip stick. Then wipe off the fluid to see where the mark is in reference to where you placed your finger. If the marks are visible on the stick then this should get you close to an accurate level.

Check the fluid level per MFGs specs (engine in neutral / park, hot, engine on / off, etc). Always insure the wheels are sufficiently chocked and the parking brake applied if you have to take it out of gear!

Thanks Ed-Deb for your reply. I guess I wasn't too good at explaining my problem with the oil check. The oil is very, very clean and clear, yet I can easily see it on the stick....the problem is that the entire dip stick is covered in oil from being splashed all over it while the engine is running. I can't see any break in the oil to indicate the actual level on it.
Not at all like checking the oil in the engine, where you check it with the engine not running....you stab the stick, remove it and can easily see the level on the stick. The tranny dipstick is completely covered in oil. Thats the issue.
