Can anyone provide the procedure for replacing the transmission output shaft seal, on an 3000 MH.

I have a feeling that with the cost of the tranny and the difficulty in separating it from the engine then dropping it, not many folks here have replaced a front seal themselves on a Allision transmission.

I'm curious, if you've removed the transmission, could you take it to a Allision service shop and just have them change the seal, then replace the transmission yourself?

I was told the output shaft seal was the seal on the rear of the transmission, thats where the leak is. Where the drive shaft ties into the transmission.

Yes, it is on the rear. On some transmissions you simply remove the drive shaft, then pry the old seal out and pop a new one in. I don't know if it's that easy on the Allison though.

One other consideration is why it failed. If it was nicked or damaged, then a simple replacement will be fine. But, if there's something else wrong, like a worn driveshaft support bushing, then the next seal will fail quickly too unless the real cause is taken care of first. It could go either way.

Had mine changed recently at allison shop. Cost $90 for 1 hour labor and $19.95 for seal. So its not to difficult of a job.

I brought my car in for an engine oil change. The shop now says that I need an output shaft for the front right side because of a leak.. I park my car in the garage every night and I have not seen a drop of tranny fluid or any other fluid for that matter. What are your thoughts? Its a 2005 Malibu 90,000. Highway travel for work..
