Trying to find a coolant reservorr tank
Im in need of a coolant reservoir tank for a 2001 Newmar Dutchstar on a Freightliner chassis. I ask my local Freightliner dealer and they quoted me a price of $708 not counting labor. They said Freightliner no longer makes the older part they sold for $108. Can anyone help me ? Thanks

Well, they are correct that the replacement tank is a new design, but they are trying for early retirement at your expense. Frieghtliner Factory Service at Gafney replaced the surge tank on my 2004 XC with ISL engine for $383. The all-metal tank was $203.53 and they charged 2 hours of labor @$90/hr.
If you have the ISC engine or a Cat C7, the cooling system and surge tank are different parts, but the price is similar.

Before I spent $708 plus labor, I would experiment a little. I have used Eternabond tape on several plastic parts with great success. Just be sure the tank is thoroughly cleaned prior to application. I use Acetone as a cleaning agent. If that fails, I would try another generic tank from an auto parts store. Since you are only trying to catch and hold the coolant (no pressure) any tank would work. I had good luck with Autozone when I needed one. I hope this helps.

I recently replaced my plastic tank with a metal one I bought from the local Freightliner store here in Phoenix. The plastic tank developed a crack and was so brittle you could scratch a hole in it with your finger nail, so no repair was possible. The price was $223 and the part number is T3495. This is on my 03 Allegro Bus with a cummins ISL with side radiator. The installation was very easy, took maybe a 1/2 hour.

Wow, I just bought one lat summer for my XCS chassis for approx. $125. Got the number from Freightliner web page. I looked and can't find the number but, I would definately check elswhere. This guy is trying to rip you off, big time. Tank cost plus no more than 3 hrs labor!!!.

You can also use a tank from a Sterling truck (a Freightliner brand). It takes a little customization, but I hear they are about half the price. I think that's a plastic tank too - not metal like the new style.
