Freightliner LLC plans to lay off up to 1,528 people at its Cleveland truck assembly plant west of Salisbury in July, the company confirmed today.
Those layoffs would be permanent, state officials said.
Officials with the Portland, Ore., company, in a written statement, said they are reducing the workforce as of July 10 because of "continued depressed market conditions."
In late March, the company laid off 1,180 people, as Freightliner scaled back from three shifts to two. At the time, Freightliner blamed the cuts on new federal diesel emissions standards, saying the regulations have forced it to add expensive technology to the trucks, causing sticker shock for buyers of 18-wheelers.
The company had between 4,500 and 5,000 workers before the layoffs began in the spring, making it Rowan County's largest employer then, said Debbie Davis, manager of the state Employment Security Commission JobLink Career Center for Rowan.
All this happens on the same day its parent company, DaimlerChrysler AG, confirmed that it was selling controlling interest in Chrysler for $7.4 billion to Cerberus Capital Management, a private equity group that specializes in turning around troubled companies."
