Came across the following article fromt he Charlotte Observer:

"Up to 1,528 more layoffs
could hit Freightliner
Company laid off 1,180 people in late March

Freightliner LLC plans to lay off up to 1,528 people at its Cleveland truck assembly plant west of Salisbury in July, the company confirmed today.

Those layoffs would be permanent, state officials said.

Officials with the Portland, Ore., company, in a written statement, said they are reducing the workforce as of July 10 because of "continued depressed market conditions."

In late March, the company laid off 1,180 people, as Freightliner scaled back from three shifts to two. At the time, Freightliner blamed the cuts on new federal diesel emissions standards, saying the regulations have forced it to add expensive technology to the trucks, causing sticker shock for buyers of 18-wheelers.

The company had between 4,500 and 5,000 workers before the layoffs began in the spring, making it Rowan County's largest employer then, said Debbie Davis, manager of the state Employment Security Commission JobLink Career Center for Rowan.

All this happens on the same day its parent company, DaimlerChrysler AG, confirmed that it was selling controlling interest in Chrysler for $7.4 billion to Cerberus Capital Management, a private equity group that specializes in turning around troubled companies."

If I'm not mistaken only FTL military and Western Star vehicles are going to be made in Portland so there would be some layoffs. They are also building onto the plant in Mexico immensely. Apparently it costs more money to make them in portland and ship them out and what not than to make them in Mexico. And yes that is correct the market has taken a turn because of the new epa07 vehicles which do cost significantly more. That has caused FTL to post record sales in 07 because people are buying up all the non epa 07 vehicles... so coming up here there will be lesser and lesser vehicles bought because people dont want apa07 trucks. I think that is the theory anyways haha but hey on the flipside we have a cool new Cascadia chassis Class 8 truck now It really is a nice rig though with alot of new features that ftl is pioneering.

Sorry to bore you guys with some useless tidbits haha
