REMOVING FACTORY DECALS

The factory decals are starting to come off on my 2002 New Horizons and I was wondering anyone else is having this problem and /or what would be the correct method to remove the rest of the decals and start over. Maybe paint a stripe or two. The factory says they don't have anymore of the old style decals. It is starting to look pretty ratty on on side where most of the decals are either coming off or shrinking up. :?:

I have no experience here although some of mine are beginning to look pretty shabby and recently I had been doing internet searches. At this point I have done nothing. Nothing I have found makes the job look easy.

I found this at:
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...rv-decals.html

Found this web site on the searches. http://www.superior-industries.com/p...oduct_221.html

Here's another thread with another solution: http://www.fiberglassrv.com/board/in...howtopic=27043

I definitely would be interested in your results -- success or otherwise.

Thanks Lloyd

I will let you know what I happens with my decal removal.

I was also looking for a post that used to be on the NHOG forum about some sort of coating, polish or something to refresh the fiberglass on my New Horzion. I should have added a the link to my favorites, but you know how far "should haves" get you. Do you or anyone know the post I am referring to. It was some sort of coating mainly used on fiberglass boats or something like that.

Thanks
Ken

Regarding the fiberglass "refresher", one time NH owner Paul Bernhagen reported his usage here: http://www.nhog.us/techtips/fiberglass.htm

Paul's note points to this which http://www.nhog.us/techtips/fiberglass.htm which is another person' experience.

Then I went to the product manufacturer. http://www.poliglow-int.com/poliglow.phtml The hype here said that it would last for about 12 months. My hope is that it would last longer on fiberglass that isn't in the water all the time like a boat.

Decal and surface protection

I too have had problems with the decals on my 1999 NH. The decal on the front of the rig really was showing its age, probably giving the bugs and sun exposure. I was able to remove the decal using a 4 inch blade or a wallpaper removal tool. Use lots of water and be careful not to mark the surface.

I have also used the Poliglow product mentioned by Paul. The product is very good, although it does take a fair amount of effort to do the entire rig. The first step is to use a Poliglow supplied cleaner to remove all dirt and wax. This stuff is really amazing and results in a very clean surface, just completely dull. The Poliglow liquid is them applied in 5 to 6 coats. This actually goes quickly, with 10 minutes or less between coats. You can do this in the sun, but Sue and I found out that after about 3 coats, the sun reflection was so bright and hot, we needed to wait until later in the afternoon. The new surface has lasted for 3 years and still is shiny (I live in California, so for part of the year the weather is very mild on the rig.) I needed more than one bottle to complete the coverage on a 30 foot trailer (shorter than a fifth wheel). I would think two bottles of the glow would be enough for most rigs. One bottle of the cleaner is sufficient.

I was lucky and managed to get two replacement decals of the original style just as Phil bought the company. Even with the super cleaner, the fiberglass does change color with age. So when you remove the decal, you can see the pure white of the original siding. Replacing the decal with the exact same shape and size does work well to recover this white area. I have not yet faced the problem of what to do if i only have the new decal, which is a different size and shape. I am concerned that even with the best prep, the shape of the original decal will be visible. The poliglow cleaner does really help, compared to soap and water. If anyone has a further idae to clean the sun fade from the fiberclass, I would love to hear it as I will be facing the problem in a few years for the remaining decals.
