Poor AC performance
My Cougar X-Lite (SQB31) would only cool about 5 degrees inside (to 80 F) when the outside was 85 F. This seemed like the AC was not working so I took it back to the dealer to have it checked. They called me to tell me that it meets specifications - it cools the air by 20 F from the outside temperature. This seems like a poor performance specification if the AC unit cannot cool the inside of the camper by more than 5 F at 85 F outside. When it reaches above 90 F we get no cooling. Does anyone have any suggestions? Another AC unit can be added for about $900, but I don't have much faith since one unit doesn't do much at all.

How are you measuring the temps? Outside temp is not important. Test the temp of the air at the return duct versus what comes out. It should be in the 20 degree range difference.
If you have the typical setup where the output and return are side by side make sure there is a good seal between the two sides. I've had situations where much of the cold air simply went back up the return.

Thanks - I'll check the seal between the return and the exhaust. I pick up my unit in the morning and will talk with the shop to confirm how they measured the temperatures.

Picked up our TT at the shop. They stated that there were no problems found/identified with the AC. It met the 20 F temperature difference from the return to the exhaust. They took the time to show me things with the AC unit and hooked up power to demo. The air flow seemed a lot higher than it used to, I hope they did something that helps even though they said there were no problems. The return filters were clean.

Its probably more of an insulation problem than a A/C problem

The TT has the Polar Package so it is insulated. The wall thickness is not much so the insulation cannot be very thick and provide much thermal insulation. You may be right!

The bottom line on whether or not the AC is working correctly is the temperature differential between outlet air and return air. 18 to 20 degrees is a pretty good indicator that the AC unit is functioning as it's suppose to.

If you really like the trailer you could always add another A/C unit to it but any way you go its going to cost $$$

I'm afraid you may be bumping up against the limitations of a single A/C vs. the volume of your unit. Our old 37' Endeavor definitely needed 2 units to stay cool ... we could struggle on 1 unit if the Endeavor was in full shade.

That was one of the things we found with our two DSDP's, the insulation was much better than most. When we ordered the '02 DSDP we added the Polar Pack, about $100 extra and well worth the cost over the 13 years we had the rig. In Yuma in 95° weather we used only one of the two 13.5 heat pumps and did just fine.

Something I found in the Keystone forums that would be helpful here...
The intake and exhaust of the roof mount A/C unit are not properly taped at the factory. We had gaps in ours between the roof and the ceiling, allowing cold air to cool our "attic." Get yourself a roll of aluminum tape and seal up those areas the best you can.
Second, the duct runs in our trailer run the ENTIRE length of the trailer. Pay no mind that the final vents are a couple feet from the ends, so those ducts are blowing cold air way past your final vents, and into who knows what area.
Once again, pull off your final vents and bust out the aluminum tape. We also stuffed foam into the empty space to help fill it up and taped it all shut.
I can't take any credit for this mod, but the original author said he went from 80 degrees to 70 in the Texas heat.
Good luck!
