Adding A Hinge To Steps for Additional Storage

Has anyone added a hinge to their steps to create a storage area for shoes, etc?

We have done a few of those. It depends on if its framed in under the steps which they are not usually. The top step tends to just have a metal platform to hold the batteries. We end up welding up a box and lining it with wood and carpet and installing a piano hinge and a latch. It works really well but like I said its is under the unit and any road debris can hit it so it will need to be pretty sturdy.

There is no step frame in there to hinge and support...
