A friend of ours has the same problem on his 2006 Holiday Rambler Navagator, and only in the black paint. He is ok with the ten foot rule. Must be my eyesight, but I have to be five feet away before I can see it. Just glad we don't have the prolem.

I had a parking lot claim last year and my insurance went up $1000. As far as the clear coat repair cost it is only about 2 RV bucks = $1000 per buck. Having been a boat owner (32 Bayliner MY) for years prior to the Motorhome it was a Boat Buck = $1000. After owning the RV the same applies and the RV buck is equal to the Boat buck. Any repair or service starts at 1 buck and up. As I told the guy at the gas station who asked 'How much does it cost to fill it up'. Reply 'if you have to ask, don't ever buy one'.

I think it is a paint problem and not a panel problem as the beige and gold do not have a problem. I will get a paint specialist to look at it to see what they think. Click image for larger version

Slabman, thanks for the heads up and the fix...I have not seen any of this on my '08 , but will keep an eye on it.
The upper parts of the coaches had little clear coat and was rampant with overspray (colors) when painted. Mine even had rough overspray on the upper (horn area) of the front cap. Little attention was paid to these upper areas by Precision (little to no sanding/leveling of base coats) as they are covered with over spray and then when you apply a clear coat, one has atomized over spay that was mostly dry when it drifted to the upper areas and did not fuse to the paint. Then final coat, nuf sayed...
I did compound the upper front cap on my '08 to get rid of the over spray and brought a shine to it and is easier to clean now. Just put a coat of Reject on it and hopefully that should fix me for a year.
I also buffed the roof and got rid of a lot of overspray there too.

I have Had Clear Lift on My 05 Select early on 2006.5 I called precision paint, At that time and they told me they had Defective Batch of Clear at that time.....So who knows whats the best product to place on these rigs ? the work involved on these rigs one would think the Best product Known would be applied....
What is the the best products ? and any other Companies have these issues ?

The Best Known Product is wax on paint.
I'm unable to wax anymore, so I must have folks do it for me.
You guys work way too hard, IMHO.
No offense intended.

After roughing the surface with a grey pad and wiping with a wax and grease cleaner, I applied 3 coats of this clear. It's a two-part product, so you have to use it all within 24 hrs. While it hardly passes for a "factory" job, it sure looks like a tough product...good enough for the roof and the curved corners up there. After I finally get around to washing the entire coach, I expect it will be mostly invisible and will keep the lift-off from progressing down the sides.

Boy, it seems like a LOT of the clear has cratered since I was last up there only a few months ago. Precision quoted me $2700 to re-do the roof and corners with new clear, touching up the paintwork in areas required up there. Gee, there isn't a LOT of paintwork when you consider most of the roof is just a fiberglas panel...only the outside edge and corners would be re-done, so that does seem like a lot of money for such a small area. Hate to think what doing the entire coach might cost!
Hi Bob,
I just noticed your thread re clear coat. The clear coat on my Alante lifted on the front cap, rear cap, the tops of both side awnings and the lower right side of the rear cap. Once it started it progressed rapidly. I took it to a RV shop and was floored by the price they quoted. I found a Maaco shop that did trucks and RV work and had them do it. It turned out perfect and a fraction of the cost of the other shop. They had to blend it on the front cap, rear cap and on the back rather than a complete repaint. You could not spot the transition areas at all. They told me the cause was excessive exposure to the sun. I don't know why I thought of Maaco, but it was a first class job. The paint match was perfect. I brought it in on Monday and picked it up on Friday. Check the tops of your awnings.

The 06 Supreme Select I just bought has the same problem. Mine is mostly black and the black has a lot of 1/2 inch cracks in it. The granite and gold colors have very very little. Someone has tried to reclear the coach and it looks "ok". I will have to paint both sides in the future. Crawled up top and the top of front and rear caps weren't repaired. The clear is simply flaking off prett bad but you don't see it from the ground. I'm putting it off until next year. It's a 20 footer that looks good and shiney until you get closer. Has to be a paint issue.

As an update to my last post. The two-part clear did look like it was bullet proof, but now I see the entire layer(s) lifting off again....after only 6-7 months! The product itself holds together well, but no stickie to the paint.
The el cheapo clear I put up there about 3 years ago is also still lifting, but it seems it stayed on a bit better, considering. Likely, it's an issue with my preparation process, although I did lightly sand and use a 3M rough-up pad, but guess it needed more. Still hope to avoid taking it back to Precision, if possible.

my 2 cents

While i can't guess at the cost to redo the clear coat, if you are in the Alvarado, TX, area you might check with Motor Home Specialist and see what they can do. Purchased our coach there in December of last year and had lots of reservations about the coach and the condition it was in. The salesman told us that would all be taken care of. It was. Clear coat on the front cap and possible the rear cap looks like it came from the factory now. Fiberglass damage to right front wheel well...can't find the damage area now. And several other things (baggage door damage, fin missing off side radiator, chrome exhaust extension) all repaired/replaced and looks like new now. The were a big TS dealer and now are big into Entegra.

As to the checking in the dark colors on the sides, unless I have been misled this is not uncommon in those dark colored areas. Actually I think I have heard it called "paint checking" and it is caused because the dark (mainly black) painted areas will absorb the heat from the sun and that causes expansion in the fiberglass. When nighttime cooling the cracks will start to appear. Mine are mostly on the driver side so to combat the additional damage I park now so the passenger side is to the sun. There is little to no checking on that side.

Mac, I also bought mine from MHSRV and can tell you they don't do ANY service work to speak of-especially something like body work. Likely, they sent your out to do. Who was your salesman? I would normally deal with Donnie, the GM.

So do you have to sand the clear coat AND the black paint off and reapply both?

Slabman, we worked with Billy Fussell. Super nice guy as was everyone else at the location. Really made spending a ton of money somewhat enjoyable. Billy took us "out back" of the shop area and showed us several units that were waiting to go through their 200 point inspection and cleanup. That is where we found our "new" motor home. He walked us through the service area and showed us a lot of what they do to make their owned coaches ready for sale. Quite an operation. Not real sure to what extent they did the work on our coach but a lot is done on site. As a matter of fact they are expanding their operation and plan on adding a bigger service facility. They were doing the land development in January when we were there last.

Know this doesn't have anything to do with the clear coat issue but I was very impressed with MHSRV and who ever did the paint and clear coat job.

The "checking" is not a paint issue, it's actually the top surface of the outside wall. Buffing and repainting will hide it for a while but it will come back. Only replacing the whole sidewall will cure it.
