Replacement Slide awning material

Hi All..
Well we are in west Yellowstone for 10 days having arrived today.. Enjoying the scenery (when you can see it through the western fire smoke).
It is quite windy here.. When my wife and I were coming home after diner I noted that the Right bedroom slide awning material is tearing at the front and back.. Looks like time for replacement. Probably should do all 3 as they are te
he same age and are beginning to show tattering at the coach rail where they are attached..
Does anyone know offhand what brand these are on my 04 Travel supreme? Are these a DIY deal or best left to someone else? Who would you recommend for replacement material.. The OEM on it really seems flimsy..
I know I will have to measure them but not a good time to drag out my collapsable ladder..
Any insight will be most appreciated..
Hope this smoke clears soon!
Ron

I bought mine custom made from RV Slide-Out Topper Awning Replacement Fabric Installation Great service and excellent material.

I installed them myself.

I had the same thing happen to me in South Dakota. After removing the two topper covers I took them to and awning shop. My thoughts was to replace, but the man told me the material was excellent quality and it was the thread used for the seams that was bad. He double stitched them for me and there still going three years later. $20 fix for me. Just a thought.

I bought the Tough Top ones for our Dutch Star. Very nice material and easy to install. Helped a friend install the Stone Voss ones on his Diplomat. They were good to but I think they were higher priced.

THe one is actually torn on both ends.. The others look tattered.. May be time.. Do you remember what brand they are?
Thanks

Can't say the brand of material. Seems like he said sunbrella. The awning are Colorado Carefree. Mine were not tattered. The threads pulled loose where the little dowel rod on the end was located. It look serious until I got up there and really inspected them.

I had mine replaced five years ago with the original Colorado Carefree awnings.
Like Dale said the material is excellent-the threads are cotton and rot. If they used nylon thread they would last longer for sure.
This time I purchased from Tough Top and got help to install. Took about half day to remove and install. Just need two ladders and a little help. Tough Top has installation info available.
Lot better than those Carefree flappers.

Ron,
I had all four of mine replaced when I was at Precision last year. They had to be special ordered to get the exact fabric and color. The number and ordering info is located on a stamp on the canvas. If I remember correctly, they manually pulled the canvas out from the roller until the stamp was visible. You can call Paul for advice . I miss my coach.

Got my new topper fabric from Chris at Stone Vos. Excellent fabric with heavy, double stitching on all seams. Price was very reasonable and shipping quick.

While at Myrtle Beach last fall, a fellow removed all his toppers, took them to a local shop who does boat covers and had them restitched with better thread. The fabric looked fine just the OEM thread (Carefree toppers) had rotted from sun exposure.

Ron,
We replaced ours this spring and did the work ourselves. It is definitely a two person job but not difficult. We also used Tough Tops. Here's a link to Tough Tops: RV Slide-Out Topper Awning Replacement Fabric Installation

Suggest watching their video at least twice and make a mental note to loosen the right end NOT the left end of the roller. The left end has the spring loaded wind-up mechanism and when you take it loose you loose all tension on the roller. (Don't ask me how I know this!) If you order from Tough Tops mention the RVGeeks and you will get a small discount.

We ordered the vinyl material and have been satisfied so far with the performance. If you do go with vinyl you will have to increase the tension on the roller an additional 3 or 4 turns as it requires more force to roll it up than the original cloth material. (Again don't ask me how I know!)

Would also suggest rounding the end of the tube where the cover inserts. The existing square corner will try to grab the material when it is inserted,

I think Carefree still makes original replacement covers for your toppers and there are several aftermarket shops that make them too. One question I asked of everyone I talked with was, "What is the brand of thread you use and is it UV resistant?"

Sounds like good advice..
Will look into this maybe in the spring after my knee replacement or something like that.. Don't think I will have time before I go in October 12th..
So does Tough Tops use UV resistant thread?
Ron

Tyler indicated they do use UV resistant thread. I know they are double stitched!

We will be passing through Las Vegas, NM the end of Sep and could detour off Route 66 long enough to give you a hand, or we could meet somewhere between Conifer and Las Vegas, NM if you are going to be on the road at that time.
