Have Directv and use home box in motorhome. Also have the 9702 Kingdome that searches a long time before locking in. Call Kingdome and tell them you want to upgrade to a new model and have a 9702 and they will give you a discount on a new one

Not sure if you made a move yet on your satellite. Mine wouldn't work either. I went to a Trac Vision dealer and they put in a new software download in for about $100 - this was about 5 years ago. Has worked perfect since. We made the Colorado run about three weeks ago. Camped at Ridgway State Park (the lake was really low) - did the Ouray, Silverton, etc tour in our toad....great area - I like all of the information I collected from all of you before I went - it really made the trip easier to plan.

Thanks

Thanks everyone for your input. Since we always stay at full hookup campgrounds and rarely need satellite TV, we elected to go with the DISH pay as you go and purchased the Tailgater Pro antenna. I also purchased the quick disconnect roof mount so I can easily relocate it when the trees are in the way, which is all the time in the campgrounds in the northeast. It works well enough for what we want and it was a relatively inexpensive setup.

Thanks again to everyone for their experiences, once again, great info on this forum.

Little late to the Party here but willing to let you all teach/direct me to the easiest solution.

First let me try to get the Mission straight – I Have a TS – 42 DSO4 2005 with the POS – King Dome that has worked One Time – then never again – We have lived in the Annapolis area for 50 years – we have used cable and DW has become attached - - so after almost 7 years of using Airplanes to get out West we have sold the house and are moving to the Eastern Shore of Maryland – No Cable - - SO – some satellite system is in our future. I like the Idea of Using the Same Box – as we will be gone in the RV for Months/Years at a time.

So the quest (as Per Ron and Lou) is to First pick a Provider that we can work with. (Being, we are thinking, we will not have a fixed address most of the time – this provider can be anywhere in the Country?) Either Dish or Direct TV – as I understand both have issues. Second I think if I’m reading this right I will remove my POS – King Dome - and install a Wiengard Travler – would I mount this on the roof or on a tripod? then i can Use the house receivers when I travel – no issue? – I will basically not need to call and change service as we seldom watch local channels?

This will provide me service for Home and on the Road – just need to either place on the roof, of the House or the Coach, or attach to a tripod, and run the cable.

Do I have it correctly thought out?

Next Question – INTERNET??? – We are owners of Verizon with Apple phones with Unlimited service plans, Just use the Phones or the I Pad as a Hot Spot.? Or is there a solution that uses the Satellite?

Solution for Sailor Lou - Since we always stay at full hookup campgrounds and rarely need satellite TV, we elected to go with the DISH pay as you go and purchased the Tailgater Pro antenna. I also purchased the quick disconnect roof mount so I can easily relocate it when the trees are in the way, which is all the time in the campgrounds in the northeast. It works well enough for what we want and it was a relatively inexpensive setup.

Only difference for us is we seldom stay in FHU and often do not have Cable so ….

Now I need to Pick a GOOD Provider – read as having Good customer service and a Great $$

Set up a satellite at home (Eastern Shore, MD) and a Travel Pro System – Roof or Tripod? – Dish or Direct TV.???

Do I Have it laid out correctly?

Thanks guys – always Best to check with the Experienced veteran’s – no need to try and reinvent the wheel.

Let me Know if I'm on the Right track,

Bill

Skipper, have you tried recalibrating the KDome? Easy to do.
Before leaving for FL last fall, I removed my 10 yr old MotoSat dish and installed an RF Mogul dish. Been very happy with it. Easy change out. Quick to locate Sat.

Bill,
You are pretty much on target with your TV info. Be advised there are no "good providers"! I was happy with DirecTV for many years AND THEN AT&T bought them sending customer service into the dumpster! It is now virtually impossible for me to reach a native english speaker and I have been told that they are stopping switching location zip codes so we can get locals. I did not have this problem in May when I did manage to get my service address changed but it did take 6 phone calls to different "customer service" reps and finally one transfer to a product specialist technician who switched me in less than 2 minutes. If you don't need locals your proposed set-up with a Travler should work. I have read a RUMOR about DISH shutting down in the near future due to non-profitability caused by so many people going to internet TV.

As for internet most locations will have service with at least one of your phones as a hotspot. There are numerous locations in the SW and NW that my phone as a hotspot was barely adequate for downloading email with no video capability at all. We also have Verizon Mi-Fi and a AT&T Mobley that work better than the phones on weak signals. Where we are presently located there is no cell service available so we are using a Wi-Fi Ranger to boost our neighbors Hughes Net satellite internet and Wi-Fi calling for the cells.

It really depends on where you are located as to what you need. Close to a metropolitan area your can get netflix with a phone hot spot. The further out of town you get the worse it gets to the point of having to go to satellite to get anything.

"Ain't it amazin' how we do our level best to get away from "civilization" but when the sun goes down we dang sure want our nightly news, sports, CSI, and movie accessibility!"

Winegard Travler or RF Mogul are both good choices for the dish. These would be permanently mounted on roof and automatically deploy and lock in once you are parked.
Dish or Directv will both allow you to have a receiver that you can use at house or take it with you when in RV. You will need to determine which provider before purchasing the Travler or RF Mogul.
Internet can be handled with a hotspot, phones or high end modems/routers. There are a lot of options in both equipment and plans. These are changing rapidly. Using you phone or iPad initially might be best to determine how much you really need.

I left Direct tv a year ago because of bad customer care and pricing. I'm happy with dish customer care and technology.

When I made the switch, I bought a Pathway x2 with the idea of trying Dish network for a year and then buy the $1500 rooftop auto dish. I like the portable dish so much Im not sure what I will do later. So many times, I have had to move the dome to avoid branches or some other obsticle. A drawback with a portable dish is that it is not 2nd tv friendly. I'm thinking of buying a 2nd portable dome mounted on the roof to support the 2nd tv so I dont have to "put both out" each stop/move. Then if there's a tree obsticle, I will temporarely run both tv's on the ground based dome.

We have had Direct TV and Dish TV. It seems that Dish has been ramping up their customer service, although they have areas they could improve upon we’ve been satisfied with Dish. I bought my first TT about 5 years ago and bought a Tailgater Antenna, a VIP 211z receiver and at first I couldn’t for the life me get the thing to work, after many calls to customer service and through repetition I finally have it figured out. We have since upgraded to a 5ver using the same Dish equipment. I can get to camp, break out equipment be up and running in 10 minutes. If I do have issues a call to customer service usually fixes it...happy with Dish

In any case, I just started looking into a replacement. I currently have DIRECTV at home, but I am thinking about switching over to DISH, due to some extremely poor customer service experiences I recently had with them. Is there an antenna out there that will work with both companies? I don't need it to function on the move, but do want something that will find and lock on automatically when we park.

Any good experiences/recommendations out there in TS land?

Thx,

Lou
Lou,
I too have the same King Dome system as you with Directv programming and just like you I had trouble with my satellite not working so I decided to remove the top cap of the satellite dish and found out that there was a telephone connector that had worked loose from the telephone wire so I plugged it back in and what do know it worked. I too was about ready to remove my dish until I found the problem. Couple weeks later on another trip it happened again. Same thing happened where it worked it’s way loose again. This time I decided to use a zip tie to ensure it wouldn’t work it’s way loose again and since then never had another issue ever again. I guess my patience paid off even though the DW says I have none.
