1000 Island area RV parks
Just picked up the coach from Entegra this week after having some warranty work. Can't say enough about the service we received. And of course the side trip to Rise and Roll.
Anyway on the way back to the S&B we talked about going to 1000 island area this summer and wondered where people would recommend staying.

That place looks awesome. That might be one of our destinations after our Entegra visit. Thanks for the tip. I'll be watching what others say as well.

Lots of NY state parks in the area such as Kring Point and Wellsley Island. There is also another state park called Grass Point. The only private campground that I recall is just west of the 1000 Island Bridge heading towards Clayton called Thousand Island Campground that has nice large pull-thru's.

Spent some time in Wellesley Island State park. Stayed in the open area in the front of the park. Very nice huge sites with plenty of space between them. Water and electric but no sewer. However, the dump station is nearby and very convenient. Satellite friendly. If I was returning to this area, I would definitely stop here again.
Be sure to visit Boldt Castle when in the area. It is really worth the visit.

Near the Thousand Islands is Association Island. It's a KOA and it is right on Lake Ontario near the beginning of the St. Lawrence River. Neat spot, but very windy.

If you are going to go through the Finger Lakes make sure you check out Watkins Glen. The Glen is pretty cool and a fun, although somewhat strenuous, walk. We usually stay at the Watkins Glen KOA and try to stay on the lower loop. These are new paved sites that are pretty nice.
There is much to do in Upstate NY. If you decide to go west you'll find a treasure chest of things to see and do from the usual tourist stop of Niagara Falls to the more offbeat like the Jello Museum in LeRoy. Have fun and safe travels.

X2 Association Island is an awesome place to stay. Bring the kayaks or rent them and enjoy. A shirt drive to a 1000 Island boat trip over to Boldt Castle and all the houses along the way. Wineries abound or go for a nice two wheel ride.

The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY (1000 Island area) is really cool and recommended if in the area. Also 3X on Watkins Glen State Park. The Glenn Curtis Museum is not too far from Watkins Glen. Upstate NY is a beautiful area in spring, summer and fall.

We loved Association Island KOA. We were there in the off season, so it was very quiet and we had no problem getting a waterfront site.

For those people NOT familiar with the 1000 Island area, Association Island is over 50 miles away from the 1000 Island Bridge and 60 miles away from Alexandria Bay where you catch the boat over to Boldt castle.
It would be a great place to stay BEFORE or AFTER visiting the 1000 Islands if that is the direction of your travel.
I am not trying to take away from the beauty and peacefulness of the Association Island KOA however the OP had asked about visiting the 1000 Islands not Henderson Harbor or the eastern part of Lake Ontario. BTW, years ago, Henderson Harbor was the GOTO place for some of the best Smallmouth Bass fishing in Lake Ontario.
I am from Rochester NY situated on Lake Ontario where I spent 49 years of my life so I've spent many years enjoying the beauty and splendor of New York State specifically the 1000 Islands, Adirondacks, St Lawrence River and Ontario Canada.
