12.5 kw genset
Test drove a 2015 Anthem the other day. We are used to an 8kw quiet diesel generator. The 12.5 seemed a lot louder. Is this normal? If so is there any way to add sound insulation?
Thanks

As I remember the 8k is a variable speed alternator generator, the 10 and 12.5 are constant speed (1800 rpm) and do seem to be louder.

12.5 seems quieter to me than the 7.5 in our previous MH?

We have the 12.5K in our 18 Anthem and it is much quieter then the 10K in our 15 Phaeton. Since it is the same engine we are assuming its the insulation? Perhaps that will help?

Most of the time it depends on whether or not the coach Mfg. installed an effective "Quiet Box" around the gen set.

The 10K and 12.5K are essentially the same generator using almost identical mechanical bits. The power generation is obviously better on the 12.5K, but in terms of noise it should be identical.
Both generators differ from smaller generators in that they operate at a constant speed. One benefit of the constant RPMs, is that the noise generated eventually fades away and is hardly noticeable to me.
Having only ever had a 10K in both of our coaches, I feel it is a very quiet generator.
If you have a coach where the generator sounds especially loud, I’d suggest hopping into another coach equipped with either a 10K or 12.5K and see if the sound is the same. If not, there could be an imperfect installation of the generator in the nosier coach.
Some earlier coaches didn’t have the correct spacing and the generator was resting on the slide structure, not isolated as desired. This can result in noise and vibration.

It is quieter than the 8K on my previous coach. Or maybe my hearing is worse. Or both.

I have a 2014 Anthem and my 12.5 is twice as noisy as my previous 7.5 KW. I need to add rubber bushings to the mounting bolts, but keep forgetting to do that. Others have said it really helped. I have added split PEX pipe to the slide on both sides and that helped some.

Is it the exhaust that is making all the noise? Has anyone tried adding a muffler?

All gen sets for motor vehicle use have a muffler/spark arrestor setup, Fed law.

I have the 10k in a Phaeton. I walk around when other coaches are running their generators. Some very quiet. Some not so quiet. Mine is in the not so quiet group.
But with 1500w solar on the roof it doesn't get much run time to annoy...

The 12.5 in my 17 Cornerstone is substantially quieter than the same genset in my 2014 Anthem, from inside or outside the coach.
Dunno why.

I should have said a resonator, not a muffler.

The Cornerstone may have a "quiet box" and additional insulation combined with a better/quieter muffler/spark arrestor.
