'14 Anthem RBQ sewer smell found/fixed

Been having an ongoing sewer holding tank smell from 1/2 bath toilet for past year. Finally tackled it myself as others unable to resolve. There is a riser pipe between the floor and toilet drop outlet that has a seal at each end (pictures attached). The seal on the top (laying loose in 1 pic) had worked its way off the riser pipe providing an open sewer vent to bathroom. To repair, I unscrewed 2 toilet bolts from floor, tilted toilet forward, removed loose riser pipe as it just slightly compresses between toilet outlet drop and floor flange, silicone sealed the riser seal ring to the top of the riser pipe, silicone sealed an additional ring gasket to the bottom of the riser pipe that seals from the underside of the riser pipe, applied soap to inner ring rubber to allow for slip on, and slid back on to the toilet drop outlet. Personally, I believe the ring seals should be silicone sealed at factory as they can just easily slide off the riser pipe with RV movement down the highway. Thought all could use this info in case of ongoing holding tank smell. Tommy

Thank you very much! We will keep that in mind if the problem should arise. Y'all are all so "handy"! Lynn

Thankfully mine was an easier fix with the sink vent. Thanks for letting us know what else can cause the problem.

Very interesting. We often get a faint odor around the toilet while travelling, so it could be that gasket working slightly loose while we roll down the road. I've already changed the sink valves and caulked around the washing machine outlet hose. There is no smell except a slight one while travelling.

Thanks for the post & pictures.

I am getting ready to install a new toilet after a small mishap slightly damaged the old one. Prior to the small mishap, I had, on rare occasion, noted a faint fecal fragrance (how's that for alliteration). I always attributed it to the use of the exhaust fan in the midship potty room (aka the cigar room).

I will use your pictures and advice when installing the new throne.
