Alternator won't spin
After parking our rig for three months, we are ready for another trip. As part of my pre-trip check, I start the engine and do my walk around. I noticed my belt was hanging down so I shut off the engine. The belt was broken, split. I grabbed my spare belt and started to install it. I got to the alternator, notice belt shreds. I tried the spin the alternator and no luck. Now know why the belt broke.
Need a mobile mechanic to install a new alternator. I tried to remove it but I don't have the right tool. A mobile mechanic should have the right tools to get the job done in no time.
I have never had an alternator freeze up and not spin. I've only had then not charge. Called Spartan, they have them in stock for $500 including shipping (Prestolite 8LHA2275V). I'll try Cummins and check other sources.
I can't wait to get on the road again. 😊

This is the first real issue in over 30,000 miles on the odometer. In the grand scheme, is all good.

My alt stopped charging last year with 50k miles. It was still spinning though. I removed it, took it to a longtime alt shop highly recommended, and he had a few new ones and rebuilts on the shelf. The old one was 175 amp but I got a brand new 200 amp Delco replacement. $160. I put it on in 30 mins.
Cummings 350 but the engine manufacturers don't build alternaters, they buy them and bolt them on. So I dont see the need to buy it from Sparten for $500 or any amount over $160.

This is a classic example of the type of thing that happens when not used for long periods of time. The most economical repair is to take it to a rebuilder. They will exchange or rebuild your unit. Your mobile tech should know where to take it. Diesel engine alternators and starters are very rebuildable. Good luck!

Shawn sorry to hear of the problem. I tried to Google your part # and the prices is the biggest secret on the internet. Like others, I would have it rebuilt. In my area the shops are everywhere, lots of boats that saltwater seizes alternators.. I have a shop right across the highway from my storage hanger.
If you can locate a shop in your area, it might pay to purchase the tools large enough to remove the alternator. Harbor Freight has everything for a one time job like yours. Take it off a then put it back on at your leisure instead of two mobile appointments.....lot cheaper too.
Don't try to remove the pulley, let the shop do that, just undo the mounting bolts. At least the belt is out of your way

I would certainly buy a rebuilt/remanufactured alternator or a new one from some on-line vendor. I would guess that your savings from Cummins price would be at least $300.

JMO, but I would elect to have my 30,000 mile alternator rebuilt than one that may have been rebuilt at 150,000 miles. More than likely Shawn just has a bearing that seized up and should be inexpensive to replace. With only 30,000 miles the armature and parts are like new.

Some thing to think about..........there are a lot of batteries in these Coach's......and if they are run down and discharged.....when you start the engine and use the alternator to charge them all back up, it gets very hot........as it is working at 100%............and won't be able to even touch it......
If not plugged in all the time, before starting the engine, I always check the battery voltage, and if down much, I start the genset and charge them back up for a while............to take the large load off the engine's alternator. This will help with the alternators life span......

@palehorse89 Excellent statement. People sometimes do not realize how much low batteries can overwork an alternator. We have a generator just for that purpose. I have no problem running the generator for an hour going down the road after an overnight dry stop. Good post and reminder.

Just a general statement: I have COMPLETELY given up on auto parts store alternators. I have discovered that the "lifetime guarantee" alternators really mean that you're guaranteed to spend your lifetime removing and replacing alternators once every few months. No thanks.
I have found a really good rebuilder and send starters and alternators to him to get them repaired. Personally, I would rather take a chance on a used OEM starter/alternator off eBay than buy a parts house rebuild or "new lifetime".

Thanks for all the information and ideas. I called Freightliner today, they have a new AC Delco for $319. I'll also search for a rebuilder company nearby.
It doesn't look too difficult to remove; I'll take another look at it.
I got a quote from Cummins mobile tech for $116 hr plus $2.71 per mile round trip. Ouch!

I wouldn't agree to an hourly. The job is straight forward and he shoud be able to give a job price. Hourly lets him to drag it out.
And $2.71 a mile? Wow.
This guy's got the estimate set up to make his house payment on one job! He spun a web, now nust waiting fkr a sucker.
You're original post said " a mobile mechanic should have the right tool and get tbe job done in no time". Yeah, he should but maybe that's not his plan. Just saying.
