Another appliance bites the dust

Our microwave has never worked. That is, it would work, but only as long as you stand next to it and hold the door closed. Now it's completely kaput. We were sitting at the dinette, reading. The oven had not been used in hours, when it suddenly beeped and showed an E-A1 error. We reset the display and closed the door. A minute later it did so again. All attempts at clearing fail.

Judicious searching shows that one can download the useless owner's manual at dozens of places, but only one place claims to have the service manual and they was 16.99 for a pdf download. I'm not that desperate that I want to encourage those folks. There are no places that list the error codes. Many people write on forums asking for a code explanation, but no one seems to reply. It's a deep dark secret. I found someone posted a thread here at IRV2 asking about this very error code, but never got a reply - even Samsung said they didn't know the meaning.

We're not going to be here long enough to get a repairman out, so I guess it's one more thing to call Entegra about.

I had that error and it turned out to be a damper motor failure. They replaced it and all is well. The only way to clear the alarm is to turn the power off and then back on.

I should have said damper control not damper motor.

I tried powering off and on, but the error reappears. I found that if my wife holds the door closed when I turn the breaker on, the error doesn't occur. She also needs to hold it closed the entire time we are cooking with it. She is not especially happy.

I did see that part of the problem may be the way that Entegra mounted the oven. The upper left corner of the oven is hard against the wood cabinet face above it, hard enough that opening the oven door forces the wood up some. I think that this is affecting the door seal and may be causing the problem. Can someone who has removed the microwave give some mounting details? I can sort of see a bracket along the bottom back. I'm not really keen on dismounting it - I think I recall that it weighs 70 pounds - but if it is a mounting issue then sending out a local Samsung repairman (around here that would be Sears) is not likely to help.

I have replaced ours once already. Just above the microwave, that wood piece comes off exposing the microwave top. 2 long screws hold it on from the top. Then underneath all the way at the back. It is held on by a plate that is screwed into the wood. The back of the microwave sits on that plate. Entegra puts some sealant back there to help stop it from rattling. It only weighs about 40-50 lbs. I replaced ours by myself by using some plastic tubs and some wood to build up underneath it. Then its just a slight lift it off the back plate, slide it out and the DW helped me from there.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Bob. How is the top wood piece fastened? Is it velcro or something similar?

You can lightly pry on it to get it off. Its held on with plastic arms that go into a plastic holder that is spring loaded to hold those arms. Grab one side or the other and carefully pull it out. Then the other side.

We feel your pain. After our second Samsung unit wouldn't work properly, we threw our hands up and replaced it with a GE model at our own expense.

Today I popped the top wood piece off. It does indeed have a regular catch (seen in the photos). The metal bar across the top from which the oven is hung is installed crooked in the coach. The bar is twisted and it looks as if the installer messed up a hole, so bent the bar to make a new one. The oven thus hangs a little crooked. I still think that there is a door mounting issue, as the door will not remain shut. And yes, it's pretty dirty up there. For that matter, we are still getting sawdust coming through the AC vents - I think I need to do that filter mod others have mentioned.

That would sure cause the door to act like it was sprung. Surprised nobody caught that when it takes 2 guys to mount a microwave. Hopefully you found the fix becasue Samsung will not remove an appliance for repair, at least on mine they would not.
