Anthem engine brake operation

I am a firm believer in driving with the engine brake on low most of the time (not in stop and go traffic). I like the added braking power it gives especially in an emergency stop. One of the things I don't like, is that on some coaches when you let up on the gas to simply coast, the engine brake engages.

I know that on some coaches, the ECM can be programmed so that the engine brake engages when you put your foot on the brake and remains on til you apply the accelerator. Take your foot off the gas and the coach will coast - no engine brake. The engine brake only engages when you touch the brakes. So I'm wondering for those of you who own the Entegra, how does your engine brake work?

Mine engages whenever the foot is not on gas pedal.

Bill, if you have it on cruise control, does it engage if the coach coasts down a hill? I think the CC is usually configured for the EB to engage if speed builds to 4 or 5 mph over the set speed.

Engine brake

Have your dealer or cummins program the ECM for which ever way you like it. Entegra is delivered with the engine brake coming on when you release the accelerator, but you can have it reprogrammed to come on when you touch the brake. The latter is how I prefer it.

I will do that. Thanks for the suggestion?

Mine is not consistant when cc engaged and coasting downhill. Sometimes engine brake will enagage when 5-6 mph above set speed other time sit does not engage even at 10-15mph in excess of set speed. I am having in checked while at factory later this month. I think it is supposed to engage.

Mine does that too (Allegro Bus with Spartan chassis). It usually comes on at 5 mph over cruise set speed but if the speed is too high or whatever it sometimes won't come on. Gotta be a Spartan thing.

I've never had my engine brake on either of my entegra coaches. The 2012 and 2013, both either had to hit cancel or the brakes to engage the engine brake. I'm sure that cummins can set it up how ever you'd like. Entegra can't do anything at the factory for the engine or chassis without having a tech from either one come there fvor the service.

let us know what you find out... i spoke with spartan today and they said the EB is not suppose to kick in while in cruise control mode.... MH should not be in cruise control when going down hill... should be taken out of cruise so EB will engage. as it is set up to operate...EB engages whenever foot is taken off the accelerator.

I know mine is older but I will tell what I found out with this issue, when the cruise control is on the ecm on the cummins side of things control it. When going down a hill it will kick on the engine brake to maintain the set speed of the cruise control. If you want to change what gear it downshifts to when the engine brake is on this is done through the ecm on the allison side of things. I had mine set to stay in 6th gear when I let off the pedal and then it will continue to slow and keep downshifting right down to 5 mph and then the brake shuts off. Hope this helps a bit.

We are at EC service centre now and Don is going to review the issue with Spartan. I will post later what I am told. It may be a week or so.

Engine brake

Tom, I haven't checked the engine brake with cruise on, but as we posted earlier I had Cummins reprogram the ecm for engine brake to come on when you touch the brake pedal otherwise the motorhome will just coast. Noel

Thanks, Noel. I just happened to see Bill's post where he said he would post back what he heard. That was over a month ago so just curious what he was told.
