I was in Colorado a couple of years ago & was camping at 10,000 feet when my Aquahot started bellowing black smoke.
This is to little air to fuel mixture, Aquahot rep told me to do several things that didn't work & it was to cold to work on it, I brought it to Aquahot in Fort Collins & the 1st thing the mechanic asked was at what altitude I was at, he then took off the rubber boot on the exhaust & discarded it then loosen a screw on the air intake & turn it to allow more air to enter.
I now adjust this each time I am at a different altitude level & it burns a lot cleaner.

I meant to say the rubber boot on the air intake.

billowing white smoke
My unit does not have an interlock switch anywherer to be found, however I am having an issue with smoking....I recently changed the bearing kit, and fuel nozzle and can't seem to get the unit to fire up properly. It did sit all last year because I broke an ear on the housing and then we decided not to go anywhere except to stay with our Airforce stationed son in Hawaii, at that point I doid have the nozzle changed....then this summer my son and I changed the bearing kit....Anyways, now that all is back in place it is smoking white. I only changed the fuel nozzle and the bearing kit, but I did not change the fuel filter, because it just never got used. I can't imagine thats why its blowing smoke as it is. Could it be the bearing kits I replaced ?? Could a missing washer cause an issue...only stir pump 3 comes on but none of the heating zones or other pumps??? I have a 2008 Monaco Camelot KFQ I winterized the water system l before leaving in December, we live in Ohio, so I wanted to besure it didnt freeze up.

I would try a new filter and see what it does. Can't hurt. Sounds like an air leak somewhere. I would try to find an Aquahot tech to look at it. You could ask Roger Burke (mentioned earlier in this thread) for his thoughts on it.

Had exact same thing happened happen on our 2019 Anthem just a few thousand miles...plugged fuel nozzle. We had to change the nozzle and to be on the safe side...all the diesel filters.. fixed problem. We think somewhere between the factory and the dealer...we got some bad fuel. The nozzle was in real bad shape.

Mine did that after not being run for a while. I let it go and it cleared up and has not done it again. My smoking issue was accompanied by it not wanting to light for a few tries. once I let it run a few cycles it gave me nop more problems. Now I am sure to run it every couple of weeks just to keep things clean.

I'm replying to this in case anyone else runs into this problem. We were in Utah skiing this winter. I had done the annual maintenance on my aquahot 450 DE before the trip. All was working fabulous until about 3 weeks into the trip the aquahot began to Billow blue/white smoke. I had been filling our fuel tank with a 5 gallon can to keep the fuel level up since we were parked for over a month. When the smoke started to occur, my first thought was a fuel pressure/atomization issue. So first thing I did (in the cold mind you) was replace the nozzle-but no luck-still smoking. Reading the troubleshooting guide my attention turned to a fuel pressure problem. I cleaned the inlet screen on the fuel pump-but it still was smoking. I thought the fuel pump might be bad, since I found a bit of debris in screen and was afraid that the fuel pump might have been damaged by it, and ordered another one. Then a lightbulb went on. The aquahot manual says that air in the fuel will cause smoke. Evidently we let the fuel level get too low, and the pickup tube was not fully submerged. Even though I filled the tank early in the troubleshooting I failed to take off the fuel filter and check for air. Upon doing so, I found the filter had a big air gap in it. I put some diesel in the filter, purged the lines, and this stopped the problem. If you encounter smoke, first check that there is enough fuel in the tank, and no air has entered the system, then go on with the other troubleshooting items! Hope this helps someone in the future!

This happened to me before-here's what the cause was

This happened to us on our Allegro Bus with an aquahot diesel and electric 450 unit. First place I started in order to fix the problem was to change the diesel burner nozzle since it had been about 8 months since I did that last (aquahot recommends this be changed annually) However, this did not solve the problem.
After researching the problem in aquahot literature, it appeared to be a fuel pump problem. I took the fuel supply line off of the pump, and found a piece of plastic fuel line lining in the intake screen, and thought that was the problem.
Put it all back together, but still had the problem. Though, I was curious whether the fuel line was primed and free from air. So, I removed fuel line from pump inlet once again, and found that there was no fuel reaching the pump.
We had been parked for a month while on a ski trip, and I had been checking the fuel gauge regularly, and added some fuel to the tank to keep it above 1/4(the fuel pickup for the aquahot on this coach is at the 1/4 tank fuel level.) Evidently I didn't add fuel soon enough, and air entered into the fuel system for the aquahot.
Our coach has a remote fuel filter for the aquahot. I unscrewed the filter, and found an air gap in the filter. I filled the filter back up to the brim with fuel, and then used a hand pump to purge the fuel line of air by removing the fuel line once again from the fuel pump inlet, and pumping until there was no more air coming out of the fuel line. That solved the issue.
My advice:
1.start by making sure you have plenty of fuel in tank, purge the fuel line and make sure there is no air in system.
2.if this doesn't solve the problem-try replacing the fuel nozzle.
3.if still no luck, make sure blower system is operating properly- there is a plastic clutch between blower motor and blower fan that sometimes fails-this will cause same smoking issue as well.
4. It's also a good idea to clean the photo eye next to the fuel nozzle. When the combustion is not taking place properly-the photo eye sometimes gets dirty and will cause start up issues- even after you have solved the "smoking" issue.
Good luck and stay warm!
