Jim, there are a couple of places I can suggest you and Melinda look into, for stops as you head to Big Bend.

For beaches every bit as good as Destin, and food that beats their pants off..

Bella Terra in Foley, AL. Right next to Gulf Shores. Fantastic RV Park, and the beaches and food will knock your socks off!

Gulf Waters RV Resort in Port Aransas, TX. Again, hard to beat the quality of this park, and the location is a very short walk over the dunes to the beach. There is plenty of great food and you're also very close to Corpus Cristi and there is a carrier you can tour. To get to Port Aransas, absolutely take the free ferry boat. It's a kick every time and a really fun experience.

Lajitas

Best food in the area:
1) Alpine. Riata , stay at Lost Alaskan
2) Marathon, Gage Hotel, be sure to shop the Target out of town
3) Terlingua , Starlight , check out the ghost town
4) Lajitas, Hotel Restaurant is ok, RV park is ok, they are fixing it up, some spaces have cable, pool is pretty nice, if warm and open.
See the big hill, closed canyon, tee pees, Presideo if ya want Mexico
In the park be sure to go down Castalon Rd. To San Elana Canyon and the Rio Grande, The Basin, see the Window, the Hot Spings down by Rio Grade Villiage.
Check out Boqueas Crossing where you can take a row boat to Mexico ( bring passport)
Love the place, been there many times, own a lot in Lajitas.
Have Fun

Was born and raised in Texas and have never lived anywhere else. Still have never been to Big Bend. Every time we think about it we say we could go to BB but in the same miles and time we can be in Ruidoso and since I was a kid of 15 Ruidoso has won out. If I ever retire Big Bend will be one of our first trips.
