Campgrounds near Isle Royal NP and Voyageurs NP

We are going to these two national parks in Michigan and Minn next year. Looking to see if anyone has taken their rig to any close by campgrounds. I have looked at various ones using the typical sources, but nothing like getting someone's recommendation who has actually been there in their rig.
thanks

We did Isle Royale in September from Copper Harbor. We stayed at the State Park. The park was nice, but needed some tree work to be done to minimize scratches to big rigs. There is another RV park close to the ferry terminal (Lake Fanny Hooe RV Park) that would be better for big rigs. If susceptible to motion sickness, be aware that the 3.5 hour ferry ride can be rough on windy days.

Thanks for the feedback, I am also looking at Grand Marais Campground & Marina on the west side as it is a shorter boat ride.

We stayed at Pine Aire resort in our Class A once.

Place is mostly a cabin rental / seasonal camper place, but they have a 50 amp site right on the water.

Our family has gone to this place every year for decades. We usually stayed in a cabin, but once we wanted to take the RV and they rented us this site. I've never seen it used before, but it's worth a phone call.

There are a number of resorts on the southwest corner of Kabetogoma, along with Chief Wooden Frog state park (and campground), this area is the only private property on the Lake, the rest is National Park.
I'd call them all and ask about campsites.

This is a beautiful area. Huge lake, unspoiled forest, fabulous fishing for Walleye, Bass, and Pike.

Hi Van,

We visited Isle Royale NP in August 2017.

We used the ferry from Grand Portage, MN to Windigo on Isle Royale for the day trip to the Island (https://www.isleroyaleboats.com/schedules.html). If I recall correctly, that's the only choice for a day trip originating from the Minnesota side. IF you decide to do this day trip, be advised that there is HUGE benefit from early booking. Seating on the boat is in the order that you made your reservations. There is limited seating inside the cabin of the boat. Once that's full, you'll be seated on a bench seat facing in the stern section or around the cabin facing the railing. Lake Superior is almost always windy and the exterior seats WILL get wet. The spray on the windward side WILL be blown into much of the stern seating section and all of the outside seating on the windward side. The water temperatures are in the low to mid 40's. We booked kind of late and ended up seated outside. We were able to get seats on the leeward side for both ways and stayed reasonably dry. Those on the windward side were literally soaked, dripping wet. I still have vivid recollection of one of those passengers with the paper money from his wallet spread out on a bench on the island trying to dry it. If you do end up outside on the windward side, anything less than pro quality full rain gear will leave you wet.

We stayed at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino RV Park (RV Park Staying). Easy in and out, nothing very special, but, completely suitable for your Anthem.

Just a few miles north of the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino RV Park is the Grand Portage National Monument (https://www.nps.gov/grpo/index.htm). That's well worth 3 -4 hours of your time.

We haven't been to Voyageurs so I can't offer any suggestions.

Oh, one other warning, the mosquitos in that part of the country can be pretty annoying, depending on time of year. When we were there in late August, they weren't any problem. A few weeks earlier and it would have been unpleasant.

Take care,
Stu
