Catastrophic steering axle tire failure

We had fun today! Running 65 on I-10 East of Kerrville Texas and boom. Front driver side blow out. No warning, no tire pressure loss, didn't hit anything that I could tell or feel.

One call to CoachNet. They had AAA Roadservice there in 30 minutes. Replaced both tires on the steering axle in 45 minutes. You could tell the tech had done this before.

Minimal damage, paint should color sand out.

Thank you Lord!

What size and brand of tire blew out and what tires did they put on?

I had a Michelin XRV 22.5 blow out, inside passenger dual, and CSAA sent two tow trucks and they had my size with them. You always hear you can't get the right make or size tire when you have a problem but this worked out great for me.

Two tow trucks because one was to replace the tire and the other BIG one towed me 70 miles to the Workhorse dealer do to extreme undercarriage damage.

$12,000 total after everything was fixed and CSAA covered it all.

Glad you are both OK!. So often you hear of a front blowout causing loss of steering control and catastrophic events.....

Did you have any safety devices such as a Safe-T Plus or Tyron?

Did your fender panel survive?

Pat

So what did you do when the tire blew.

Option 1: Stand on brakes with both feet
Option 2: Hit the gas to re-gain control then gently stop
Option 3: Coast to a stop.

Somehow.. I'm guessing it was NOT option 1 (Cause if it was you'd not likely be posting)

For folks who need to know why.. There are some Videos around here somewhere that may just save your life (Watching these videos may save your life) Most RV forums have a thread with a title something like that and most have either a link to the video or the file in their libraries.

Very good video.. The driver of the RV in the video... It's his Dad's RV.. I've met him.

Glad to hear you guys are ok and you coach is not damaged.

Can you describe the handling of the coach from the point of blowout to the point at which you had the coach on the side of the road?

Curt

Terry, sure glad no major damage was done and everyone is OK. What was the make and model of the tire that failed? What an experience and the one we all dread.

Glad you are okay Terry. I had a front right blow catastrophically like yours on my old Monaco. The bad part was my wife was about to sit down when it happened. She screamed so loud I thought she was hit. She jumped and came down odd and broke her toe.....not a happy day for these campers.

OEM Good Year 295 80R 22.5. G670 model. No added steering parts or features just straight stock Spartan.

Coach Net checked around and called back within minutes to say the road service only had a Michelin and that they would want to pull a rear tire and move it up so that the steering axle would have identical tires. Well obviously that wouldn't work I told them because the rears are a different width. Just bring me two Michelins and swap them both.

The steering was not as bad as I would have expected. The sudden explosion and seeing shrapnel out of my pereiral vision caused that stupid ducking reaction, talk about wasted motion when you don't need to be wasting any time. It pulled me about half way into the next (left) lane, which thankfully was open, then I got it back and started braking. No I did not stand on the brakes with both feet, everything was under some form of control, now start slowing down and as speed decreases head for the shoulder. Once we got down to about 20 or so and on the shoulder I started to stand on the brakes because I had the end of a guard rail coming up rapidly. Braking at this point wasn't very good because we only had one front tire but we got stopped with about 15' to spare. It wasn't a very good place to be stopped as we were on a curve just below the crest of a hill. I unhooked the car right away and ran it back about a 100 yards with the flashers on and fairly close to the lane to act as a buffer.

I think the reason it was as controllable as it was is because these coaches are very stable for their weight and I'm sure the tag axle plays a big part in that. The gas job we had before the Entegra would have been in the weeds in short order because it felt like you were always on the edge of controllability.

Other than some marred paint the only damage was the wire to the side light got pulled out of its connector. Even my LED rope lights survived.

Nice follow up post Terry, thanks. JMO but I think it was a wise decision replacing the fronts with new Michelin's. Do you notice any difference in the steering with the Michelin's?

Wow, glad to hear you are well. What a scary experience.

Its also good to hear your account of how the coach responded during the crisis.

Do y ou know what air pressure you had before you left on your trip? Did it blow due to tire failure or from something in the road?
