Changing A/C Filters

Some of you have cleaned/changed the air conditioning filters, twelve in all. I just did mine for the second time today. Here are some tips that make the process a little faster and less frustrating. I have not washed the foam filters that came with the coach. I replaced them with the filters in the first photo. They are available at Home Depot for three or bucks a pack. They are slightly larger than needed. I used the first replacement as a pattern laid on top of the twelve filters and used a VERY sharp slicing knife to cut the whole stack to size. Next step is to turn on the unit you are working on and remove the filters one at a time. With the unit running and only one filter at a time out, they will stay in place while you are removing or replacing the screws. I use a Black and Decker electric screw driver with a #2 robertson bit on the screws. The electric screw driver is much lighter than my drill. You will appreciate that after doing a few filters. After completing the job, sit down, relax, and check out this forum for the next "need to do" item.

IMO washing the A/C filters is neither slow or frustrating....and it costs nothing!

Bill, I am also going to change to the same filters and a thought came to mind. Those filters are washable. I am going to buy two packages, and throw the first dirty set in the tops shelf of the dishwasher so I am not waiting for them to dry out as I replace the filters. Those filters are great, I have used them before. Good post.

A couple of days ago my wife was folding laundry in our parked coach and noticed it was pretty hot in the bedroom. I went out to check and noted right away very little air coming out of the vents. The filters were filthy, never cleaned before. So went ahead and washed them all and reinstall. Not a big deal, just tedious. An electric screw driver makes it a lot easier. Coach is back to 72 degrees. I think I will replace them next go around because they do stretch a bit when you wash them.

I have roof air completly different filter system (it filters the intake)

However that would make good sense on the furnace filters for assorted reasons,, I may do that.

The manual for most RV furnaces recommend that no filters be used on/in either the cold air intake, (return).... and/or the out-put registers.....(best check your manual).

Mel: wa8yxm is talking about the roof air con filters.

We have a bunch of the round 4" inlets in our DSDP. The outlets don't have filters, the inlets do. I bought a pack of the filter material and cut new ones out of it. Every year I take the old ones out, replace with clean ones, wring them out and let them dry for the next year.

In between the tedious job of washing the filters, I run the central vac brush over the filters every week or so. It seems to help.
