Changing axle hub grease

I wanted to make sure I'm correct on when the grease is supposed to be changed in the front and tag hubs. Front what I'm reading it looks like it needs to be done annually. Is this correct? If so can anyone offer any advice on the easiest way to accomplish this task.

2017 Anthem 44A

Thanks
Jeff

I think it's around 25-30,000 miles Years ago, on the big trucks we'd get a new gasket and pull the whole cover off. You might be able to use the fill plug for a drain as well. I'll see what works when it's time.

I may be wrong, but I have always gone by the color of the hub oil. When it starts to get dirty looking, I change it. I can't see changing by the calendar in a sealed unit that gets very little use. That's just me.

.....I am sure fluid [grease????] change schedules vary by manufacturers. My experience with hub maintenance [front only/no tag] is that most of the hub oil is in the hollow of the hub. Removing fill or drain plugs [Stemco hub] gets only a fraction of the oil out. Even removing the 6-bolt cover and gasket doesn't get out a lot more oil. So unless you are removing the hub or are able to get a drain tube in behind the outside bearing, you aren't "changing" much fluid--in my experience.
Now as to why you would need to "change" fluid annually--I have no idea. Do recommend you check the bearing pre-load every 50k miles--but that is another issue.

Do you have a way to remove the front wheels and tag wheels? I use a 3/4" drive air impact and a 22 ton air jack to raise the coach when working on said wheel. If you don't have any way of pulling a wheel off the coach then you will need to have a Pro do this work for you.

The process requires multiple 3/4" drive tools and a way to lift and handle the wheel tire package when you remove the lug nuts I use the OTC 5096A tire dolly to remove and install the combo. It is simple to do with the correct tools and yet quite involved also.

The process is for Grease hubs service change. You did stated grease service. If you have oil bath, simply drain and refill. If you have oil bath hubs never use Brake cleaner to clean the sight glass on the hub cover. It will damage the plastic sight glass and make them brittle and break prematurely.

To avoid leakage issues, I would simply jack it up so you can spin the wheel by hand. Support it with a properly rated jack stand. Use the drain port on the side and simply drain what you can and refil.

When you refill, add oil until you’re just over the ADD line, and well before the FULL line. If you fill to FULL, it will puke oils for thousands of miles.

Do this annually and you will keep the oil fresh enough. You may only get 25-30% each year, but over time you’ll get enough changed where the oil shouldn’t be a worry.

I would discourage you from pulling the Stemco hub as it’s easy to ruin and they can be a little tricky to get a leak free installation. At least that has been my experience and I’m on set #3.

I used a turkey baster when I did mine a few weeks ago, that got most of the fluid out.

The reason for servicing the hubs each year is because you are only getting out a small portion of the actual capacity and the fluid absorbs moisture from the air as the stemco vent breathes so within a year or so it is getting milky coloured.

Do you actually have grease? I ask because mine came from the factory packed with grease instead of oil. When I went to Spartan for the academy, they cleaned all the hubs and replaced the contents with oil. They told me that a batch had accidentally gotten released packed the wrong way.

We had the same thing when they did the first 44 point inspection. Converted to oil bath.

The axles are probably built and shipped with grease in the hubs, from the manufacture.

There is nothing wrong with packed wheel bearings.
