Changing Genny Fuel Pump, Contrary to Popular Belief

My stay at Quartzsite at the Gathering ended abruptly Friday when my generator quit running. Most here know the coach won't last long without genny power, so I needed to get on it. It showed a service code 36, which basically says the generator stopped for an unknown reason. After a little diagnosis, I figured out it wasn't getting fuel, so I borrowed a filter from Gary Jones. No go on that (and no fuel coming from the line), so I decided it was the lift pump. Checked that and sure enough, bad lift pump.

So I've been told many times by many different and reputable sources that you cannot change a generator fuel pump in an Entegra Coach because the Entegra factory blocks access to the pump cover plate put in by Onan during manufacture. I probably should have looked myself in the first place...when I did I found it a little difficult to get to, but quite do-able.

Here's the correct part, $80 from Cummins Rocky Mountain in Phoenix, in stock:

Here's the location of the cover placed by Onan, NOT on the bottom as many have told me. It is low on the generator toward the back of the coach next to the left (driver's) frame rail. Four 10mm bolts to get the cover off.

Once the cover is off, you will need a 1/4 drive 10 mm socket and extension to get the two mounting bolts out. They are top and bottom of the filter and come out pretty easily. After they are removed, the filter will pull out of the generator housing as you can see here. First step is to unplug the wires (they can only go on one way, so don't worry about that). On one end of the filter is a standard hex flare fitting. This must be removed first, then the odd square flare on the other end can be removed.

Reverse the process and re-install...once I re-installed and tried it I realized the pump makes a distinct clicking noise when it is operating properly. You can listen for that noise in the area of the pump for diagnosis. Prime the pump by holding the switch in the off position, and then try to start it. You may have to do this for 20 seconds at a time several times before it will run properly.

No problem, all. Generator is a 2013 model installed in a 2014 coach purchased in January 2014, it now has 800 hours on it.

What genset; 10K or 12K? If 12K, does anyone know if it is same pump/set up/location on the 10K Onan?

It's the 12.5 QD HDKCB late model with the Kubota engine, not sure about the 10K. This is the common engine combination since 2010.
