Check engine compartment

Last week we had inspected the engine compartment from the engine hatch while practicing for my Class B test. Found some wiring laying on the exhaust pipe. Wires had melted down to the medal jacket. We wrapped them up and placed them in a plastic sleeve then attached them to a brace. This was never done at the factory as far as I can tell and this harness dangled down without us noticing for sometime and maybe a year.
The DW crawled up under the Anthem to do a visual inspection today. Several problems discovered. Not sure where some of these stains are coming from but can clearly see the leak on the valve.
I didn't see any of this from the engine hatch. I think it would be wise to get up under the Coach on a regular basis from this point on.

Good post Jim. That is the reason I still get underneath and lube mine before each trip long trip. As the MH gets older, more things get discovered while underneath.

As a friend of mine told me, "they are only new once".

Jim and Natalie - thanks for pointing this out... While what you found is disconcerting, it makes me especially worrisome, since I own the same year/model MH that you do...

Another item to add to the PDI list and the 6 month/annual list of things to check/inspect...

Thanks brobox - this says it very well: "As a friend of mine told me, "they are only new once".

Something else to look for. Found these hoses shedding their outer rubberjust above the DEF and exhaust system. You can see the light blue under thedark rubber coating. Appears to be too hot for these hoses in this area.
Also found another leak coming out of the plastic shell housing engine coolent hose.

Ouch ... thanks for posting. Guess I'd better get under there sometime soon and see if we have any of these issues.

Jim

When it dries, DEF turns a thick bluish white substance and can be pretty thick.... You sure that blue substance on the wiring isn't Blue DEF that has dripped and dried on those wires?

Even new--most large motor homes are comprised of tens of thousands of parts. Even with a 98% accuracy rate [good luck on this one], this leaves room for 100s of things to be built wrong or eventually go wrong. So even new--you are going to have problems!!!! Under the coach is a really good place to see some of these problems.

Hi Gary, The hose is above the DEF system. If you look real close at the picture you will see the outer coat is coming off. I can only say from my point of view that it looks like the heat would be causing this. The area above the DEF on the other side has a heat treated wall but not the side close to the engine.

Jim, was the petcock on the bottom of your engine loose or did it fail? Have you had your radiator & or engine flushed? This is a item that hardly ever fails unless someone has over tighten it. Have great travels my friend.

I never touched the petcock on the underside of the engine. Matter of fact I never even knew it was there until we noticed the dripping coming off of it. I shouldn't say we the DW did all the work she's the one that climbed underneath the coach and took all the pictures. We have never had the radiator or engine flushed. We have been adding coolant over the last several months. Obviously this has been dripping as I have been replenishing at the reservoir.

Are you sure that coating that's coming off isn't overspray from undercoating? It would be unusual to have a thin coating like that on tubing. Noel
