Coming out of cruise control

I have noticed when Im going 65+ MPH and I hit the cancel button the coach jerks a little, I get the same result when I tap the breaks. It happens on flat straight always and even more on an incline. Curious if this is normal. I worry it may not be and a strain on the transmission if it is not and I need to get it looked at.

My ISL 400 with Allison 3000 does the same thing if I hit the cancel. Doesn't if I have my foot on the throttle when I cancel or hit the brake pedal.

Ahh, that may be the trick, I don't have my foot on it. I'm used to a gasser, cancel and it just slows down. Ill give it a try. Leaving for Wadsworth, Ohio (insane I know) for the x-mas holidays. I better get A LOT of presents for this ride.

Where is your exhaust brake set. If you're running on High when you cancel the cruise and don't have your foot on the accelerator the exhaust brake will kick in and is more noticeable on the high setting.

What does "running on High" mean??

My PacBrake is either ON or OFF.

Do some exhaust brakes have high/low settings?

We're on the Entegra forum and I believe all Entegra's have two stage exhaust brakes. Mine does anyway.

Mel...I'm not sure if you are pointing out the differences between an exhaust brake like PacBrake or engine brake like Jake Brake?

The Entegras come with a 2 stage Jake Brake system. There are some units, like mine, that only had a 1 stage Jake Brake.

Ah yes...the great debate on running with the engine brake on. LOL

I would suppose that the best way to verify that it is the EB causing the jerk is to also look at the dash for the light that says the EB is engaged. That would confirm for the OP your suggested reason for the jerk.

Thanks for clearing that up!

Apparently some coach owners don't know the difference between a compression release engine brake, (frequently called a Jake brake or Jacobs brake), and an Exhaust Brake, (like the PacBrake)......

What's worse, IMO, is that some apparently have no idea what they have.

Thanks again

The jake brake on my Anthem is programmed to only come on when you touch the brake, but i still get a "jerk" if I disconnect the cruise without my foot on the throttle. I believe the reason for this is because you are suddenly killing any throttle input instead of gradually with the throttle. The reason I had the jake brake programmed to come on with touching the brake is because I want the mh to coast without trying to feather the throttle to keep the jake brake off. Noel

I've never seen a single stage compression brake. Do you mean the exhaust brake built for a while by the Jacobs Corp and marketed under the name "Jake" brake. I only mention this as all exhaust type brakes have a lube point that should be hit with a high temp lube.

Jake brake is reported as the louder of the 2. I have heard 18-wheeler engine brakes rattle windows. Does anyone have an idea how loud the Jake brake is in our Entegras?

I turn mine off, if I think of it, when I see a sign prohibiting them. I would hate to get a ticket for creating a public disturbance!

Many older trucks run essentially un muffled exhaust and the Jake sound is very sharp. It's not nearly so noticeable in motorhome service. I have always ignored these signs and plan to continue to do so. If you want to hear yours open a cockpit window on the exhaust side when going through a tunnel or a solid barrier next to your travel lane. You will hear a change in the sound but not much in sound level.
