Cornerweights

Anyone know where I can get weights for each wheel in Southern Michigan along the I-94 corridor or in Oakland or Washtenaw counties. Now running 120 in steers, 85 in drives and 95 in tags.
Thanks

I don’t know the counties, but if you are near Charlotte, Spartan can donut for you.

Cheers

X2 - just had it done there at the Spartan Academy session. Professionally done and great support to set tire inflations.

And BTW the Academy was great.

If you're in Washtenaw county, Ann Arbor to Charlotte is only an hour and 15 minutes.

Most weights I've seen are more like 95 in the drive and 85 in the tags...

If all else fails, hit one of the CAT scales when your fuel up just to get the front axle gross weight. This will give you an idea of where to set the fronts. Probably a firm drive right now at 120 - and the rears, like stated earlier, are probably OK until you can get a corner weigh completed.

Steve

Had 4 corner weights gor my 25 Anthem and published themsevetal tunes on this forum. Search for them. However I remember that I ran 122 pounds on my steers and that worked well.

As Mark said, at least a CAT scale in the mean time. My RBQ was front end heavy at 16,560 lbs requiring 125 PSI in the fronts, 85 PSI in all of the rears. When I 4 corner weighed, I was 1,100 lbs heavier on the D/S side. Another forum member with a DLQ was the same way.

Please educate me. What is the advantage of weighting the wheels?

You are not weighing the wheels..... you are weighing the weight and load that is carried by each wheel position. Your tires (all tires) are designed to carry a certain maximum weight at a given pressure. There is a maximum weight for the tire model, and there is a weight at each pressure that you can run in that tire. Lets say a Michelin 315 should never be aired up at less than 85 pounds given any load on that tire but then Michelin publishes a table that shows that at 100#, it can safely carry X amount of load, at 105# it can safely carry Y pounds (more weight than at 100#) pounds, and at 110# it can safely carry even more load. So, what you inflate your tires to is determined by the load on that specific tire. Now, on the steers this is particularly critical since only 2 tires have to carry all the weight of the front half of the coach and underinflation or over weight can be a major cause of tire blowouts and problems.

You could always inflate your tires to the maximum pressure that the tire is designed to take, but then you have a VERY and needlessly rough ride. But you dont want them underinflated for the load that they have to carry. So to get the pressure at the point that it is safe carrying the load applied, you need to know what weight that specific tire is carrying. I will find a link to Michelin's tire load tables to publish up here, but each tire manufacturer does the same thing.... there is a table that shows loads and pressures, absolute minimum pressure and absolute maximum loads per tire position.

Now on the drives, you have two tires at each position (dual pair on the left and dual pair on the right). Obviously, each tire shares the load for that pair, and again, the tire manufacturers publish a table with the weight (loads) that a pair of their tires of a specific model and type can carry, and you should never exceed that weight. Now there is a proper pressure in both of those tires to be inflated to carry the load that those tires carry.

So, when I weigh 4 corner weights, I get the weight on each of the front steer tires, the weight (loads) on each pair of drive tires and the weights on each of the tag axle tires Once I have those 6 loads, I can inflate the tires to properly carry that specific load safely but not give myself a needlessly rough ride.

Here is a link for all of Michelin RV tire models with load and inflation data....:

Maybe others can explain better or correct any fine points.

Well said Gary

We just left Spartan Academy (Highly recommend BTW) and we had four corner weights done as part of the course. Initially we were way off and it was realized that the process hadn't been done properly. Revised weights were much better and we moved a few things and came up with accurate weights. Using the Michelin tables, we were 100/85/85.

Had two 300 mile drives and the difference was amazing. In fact by straddling the crown the coach tracked perfectly straight. And the ride was smooth and pleasant.

I am a believer in 4 corner weights and the table. (Spartan persuaded me not to add 5 lbs as a safety factor.)

Emerson

Those pressures on your steers sure seem pretty light to me. Now, I have not yet had my coach 4-corner weighed, but were your weights done at Spartan on a fully loaded coach for a long trip (completely full diesel tank, completely full fresh water tank, and maybe gray and black at 50%)?

I asked other owners of 2018 cornerstones what their loaded 4 corner weights were and their figures made me go up considerably more than you are running. How were you loaded: light or heavy?

Im not particulary satisfied with myt "ride" at this point. This coach is doing more porpoising than my Anthem did and the bridge transitions are rougher than the Anthem used to make. I ran less pressure on the Anthem. I will be getting my coach 4-corner weighed at NIRVC when I head there in a couple of weeks to get some repairs made and will publish those exact weights when I get them done.... but interested in your weights/condition.

If you are fortunate you may be able to find a highway scale close by where they leave the scale on when unattended. By weighing the axles and then weighing each wheel you may be able to get weights that are very close.

The actual weight of the coach is constantly fluctuating so there will be no absolute correct weight.

By comparing the individual wheel weights to the axle weight you will be able to approximate the error in the individual weights.

Scale sites are built to be level for 100' on the approach and exit to the platform. The side slope is less than 1% to the side so if you have the wheels that are off of the scale close to the scale the weight shift should be negligible. Check that the scale surface is very close to the approach surface. Scales should weigh correctly no matter where you are on the deck.

If you have a full water and fuel tank the transfer of weight will be very small.

I have had some success with talking to the officers at an open scale and if not too busy they may assist you in weighing your unit. And you will get an official printout. Worst thing they can say is no.

Remember also that if the left and right on an axle differ, put air in BOTH sides up to the amount needed for the heavier side.

I just checked from your profile, you are only 89 miles from Spartan. Should be able to call on one of your trips out of town and get weighed fully loaded. How lucky you are to be that close.
