dash cameras

I tried to search the forum for any thds on dash cams, but found nothing. We are headed out for a run to the border near San Antonio, Texas and want to install a dash cam before hitting the road. Looking for advice as to a good quality dash cam. THANKS!

We have 3 Cobra CDR895D units. Both front and rear in both cars and plan to use our 3rd one in our coach. I may not be adding the rear camera on the coach, but could use it to record the INSIDE of the coach.

Records when the engine is turned on. Records in 3, 5, or 10 minute segments, looping and replacing the oldest recording as it records (both front and rear). Senses an accident or hard jarring and saves the recording permanently and does not copy over it until you say to.

Also has optional "parking mode" where it starts recording if it detects motion or movement (like someone opening a door) and records it.

Has saved us once already in an accident, with solid proof that the other driver rear-ended us, and it wasn't our fault.

All 3 units have been upgraded with maxiumum storage (removable memory card). So they are interchangable if needed, and consistent in thier operation from vehicle to vehicle. They have been very reliable, good quality video (even at night) and trouble free.

Connects to my computer using a USB port and is simple to save and copy the recordings.

Hmmm, I know this is probably a silly question but...why? Why would I want a front and rear camera? Well really, why a camera at all?

Because when you are driving a $400,000 plus motorcoach and you are involved in any sort of accident, everyone and every lawyer thinks you are someone with enough resources to take to the cleaners. If you are at fault, then you are on your own, but if you are not at fault, a dashcam can save you a bundle.

That’s from a legal standpoint. In addition, mine records about 12 hours of video before it wrapsaround and takes some of the best video as we travel.

Worth every penny if it’s ever needed

Hmm, that makes sense. Which one do you have and would you recommend it for a newbie?

I have two Garmin 10s and a 35 I think it is. Love them all and they all have fantastic pictures. You canít go wrong with Garmin and as a huge avionics company, you wonít need to worry about Garmin going about of business and disappearing 6 months from now.

If you Google it, you can also find factory refurbed dash cams in perfect condition for about 2/3 the new price. I have mine set up on a 12 volt switched ignition circuit so it turns itself on and off in the cars. You can plug them into a USB port in your computer and offload to your computer. Give them a serious look.
