Dashboard Creaking Sound

3000 miles cross country on some of our country's not so great roadways have created what sounds like a creaking rattle under the passenger side of the plastic dashboard on our 2017 Aspire.

I've pulled up the Velcro brown tray to look inside but don't see anything in there that appears to be creating the noise. Almost sounds like it needs a shim between the edge of the dash and the windshield rubber seal.

Anyone had this occur and have a temporary fix until I can get home & back to dealer next month?

Thanks!

FWIW, every time I thought I had a squeak or rattle up front, it always has been the screws loose on the valence around the front windows. Sound travels somewhat, so I'd check that.

I had what sounds like the same issue with my '15. Didn't do it when new, but started around 5-8000 miles. My guess was the same as yours - rubbing/creaking between the dash and the windshield seal. I kept trying to slip a thin cutting board sheet in there with no luck. It was driving me crazy and was my #1 complaint with the coach. Never found a temporary fix.

Had the coach at Middlebury a few weeks ago for PDI and based on one 300-mile trip I think they fixed it. My understanding (not sure this is correct) is that the dash sits on a plywood piece and those pieces were not adequately tied together or adequately tied to whatever frame/support is there - something about screws too short or not enough screws. I think they added a dozen or more screws from underneath in the generator area all along the front of the dash near the windshield.

Get someone from Customer Service to talk to the tech who did the work on mine. Mike Lucas was my Service Advisor and Rich was the technician who worked on the dash. I was there April 13-20.

Ron,

Thanks for the post. Exactly the same symptoms I am having so now I know where to look and what to do.

I'd like to know how to fix this. Mine is out of warranty now. I have always had that creaking noise from the driver's side. Sounds like plastic on plastic or Styrofoam.

I did mention it at my PDI 18 mos ago but it was not addressed.

Pictures of the exact locations for extra/longer screws would be most appreciated.

I'll see if I can get photos when I'm back at the coach in a few days, but even if I can see them, I won't know which were original and which were added, and more importantly (I think), I won't know the length of the added screws. I really think it would be best to get a CS rep to talk to Rich - they're just a few steps away from the shop and he'll know exactly what he did and how for an owner to do it in the field. I had asked PJ about this when on the factory tour with him and he described what I think was the same root cause that Rich did, so he might be another source of info.

That's OK - at least I'll have a starting point.

Got in there this afternoon to try to get some photos and I can see why it sounds like "plastic on styrofoam". There is a bunch of the expanded foam insulation in that area that probably accounts for some of the sound. The photos aren't great but hopefully they will help.

It looks like he tried putting the screws in the areas where there are wooden spacers, and in one case it looks like he added a new spacer (or perhaps replaced one). He worked on it one day and I test drove in the evening - it was much better but still creaked right in the Driver's side corner so he went back at it the next day. I think on the second day of work he started putting washers under the screw heads as you can see some on the driver's side but not on the passenger side. Probably a "best practice" to include if you try to work on it. I tried to see if I could get a photo of an exposed screw somewhere to get a feel for the length, but I could not - they're either all into the spacer blocks or hidden by foam.

Yes - thanks for the Pix - it's a starting point to look at when I have nothing else to fix or maintain.

Confirmed Fix

Added screws as detailed in the picture in post #9. I found that there were no screws securing the dash down on the drivers side at the front. The screws that were on the middle part and passenger side were too short and not holding anything. Once the new screws (2.5") were added and test driven today on some rough roads I can say that the squeaky dash problem is solved.

Thanks Ron for the tip on where to look and how to solve.

Awesome - glad it worked for you too. Since my last post on this topic I driven from Ohio to Colorado and it was so nice not to hear all that. On our last morning of driving it was in the 30s as we left the campground and I did hear a little of it come back, but it cleared up as the day warmed. I'll go under there and retighten if I start hearing it again on a regular basis.

If using 2.5" fasteners, is there much chance of blowing through the dash?

Any idea if the plywood is 1/2" or 3/4"?

Thanks for this topic guys, we are trying to clean up the noises before we leave on our big trip.
