DEF Useage

I just got back from a 2241 Mile trip and I have a 2016 Cornerstone with a 600 Cummins and used 15 Gals of DEF seems high to me, is this normal or high. Just had a software update before the trip at Cummins.

Recently finished a trip from NE Florida to Dallas, TX, San Antonio,TX, and back home for about 2500 miles.
We used just a little over 6 gallons of def with the 2017 Cummins 360HP, 6.7L.

i know guys that even at the 'cost' of voiding their warranties, have stripped the DEF system out because they could not go 6 months without a DEF failure, which then gives you like 50 miles before it disables your vehicle......they have luckily limped into a dealer only to be told the parts are on back order because so many of them are failing.

i know one guy sat for 8 days waiting!

With the larger motor you will use about a ratio of 4% DEF to Fuel. If you do the math you are right in the ballpark. 373 gallon at 4% is 14.94 assuming mileage at 6 mpg. The 450 will be at about 2%. Just fill it up, keep a spare jug of DEF in the coach and drive it like you stole it (per big Mike). By the way have fun and enjoy the ride. We get our DEF as Wal-Mart most of the time and always have a spare on board.

Not sure if I could strip out the exhaust after treatment and still start the engine.

The DEF system surely adds complexity and opportunity for failure however I think it has matured to the point that catastrophic disabling failures are rare - at least we don't see them reported here often.

Usage seems about right! The 600hp is thirsty. They claim the 2018 is better on def usage. We shall see!

I don't think that would work on a Spartan chassis MH. There are so many sensors and fault codes that degrade the engine to limp mode if the DEF system has a fault you'd have to be both an automotive and software engineer to accomplish this.

Not to mention what the EPA or state pollution folks would do if this was discovered.

I am not in great love with having to put in DEF but it does have a side benefit other than the obvious pollution control. My Entegra puts out 1% of the diesel soot my old Monaco did. It stays cleaner and my toad is far less dirty.

Just sayin...l

Just talked to cummings and the 18 with single canister uses the same amount of DEF in the 605 HP. You just gained a little weight savings, 110 lbs going to one canister.

Yep, they drink a lot! I just fill it when I start and add as necessary.

X2 I can even run my MH in the hanger now without being asked to pull it outside becasue of the diesel fumes. Less trip to the car wash to wash the exhaust off almost pays for the DEF

For the OP, listen to 600 HP Cummins owners and not those with much smaller engines like me. My 450 uses about 1/2 the DEF as a 600. We just did 1360 mile and I used aprox 5 gallons of DEF.

I am in an Anthem so the ISL engine but I just completed a 4300 mile journey and used just a tad under 12 gallons.

I just ran 17.5 gallons through my 600 ISX on a 3,273 mile trip. The big 15 liter engine does burn more DEF than the 9 liter ISL so you are about right. I made a shelf over my fresh water tank on the curbside that holds four of the Walmart 2.5 gallon jugs. I can top them off and get new jugs at my convenience but I'm good till over 4,000 miles until I have to worry about buying more DEF.
