This is post couldn’t have come at a better time. Got up on the roof of the coach and noticed that the reflector was cracked around the bolts.

I called Winegard and explained the problem and got the standard, hmmm never heard about this one! Then the questions about it being a Direct TV four bolt setup, which they don’t make any more.

To fix it would cost ~220$ plus tax and shipping, since they claim I’m out of warranty. This is the cost of the reflector and a new mount for the reflector since Winegard doesn’t use four bolts any more. The reflector now uses two bolts and two clips to hold it in place.

So, if I was anyone out there and still under warranty I’d double check my reflector and if there’s a slight chance of a problem get it fixed now.....

Just replaced my direct tv reflector. Cracks around two of the bolt holes. Was chasing a poor signal strength issue. The tiny bit of movement caused a severe reduction in signal strength.

Does there appear to be any improvement with the new reflector? The reflector I currently have appears to be a cheap thinly stamped piece of metal. I would hope that Winegard beefed up the metal some to help mitigate this problem.

Paul, my experience with 3 DirecTV reflectors and now a DISH brand is still a cheap stamped thin sheet metal product. I added slightly longer bolts and fender washers to the last DirecTV one and this reminds me to get on the roof and modify the New DISH reflector too. Tomorrows project !

You might check Amazon.

Yup, I saw, I think, Don's modification with the SS screws and SS fender washers. Tomorrow’s project also. Will be heading to Lowe’s for the hardware and then back on the roof.

I sent Joyce Skinner an email explaining the problem and the fact that Winegard doesn’t give a rats a$$ about the problem. I don’t expect a response, since I’m out of warranty, but I wanted her to know my disappointment.

Some of the information that you have does not seem right. My Winegard Trav'ler on this 2019 Cornerstone is obviously just 18 months old. So it had the "new" DirecTV reflector on it. That reflector has two screws (the top positions when in sat finding position) and the bottom two anchors are tabs that slot into tab slots on the mounting plate. This reflector is cheap stamped steel. If you look at my pix in the first post in this thread, you will see the DirecTV version.

The DishNetwork version of the reflector was bought off of Amazon. The Reflector itself is under $50 delivered. It is again cheap stamped steel. However, there are 4 holes in it, 2 in the top position, and 2 in the bottom (instead of the stamped holes in the Direct mounting reflector and mounting steel). My first post in this thread shows the Dish version of the

It is my understanding that Winegard does NOT make any of the reflectors, but rather gets them from Direct or Dish and then resells them. They used to make a combination package of the LMBs, the arm, and the reflector which was called something like the OE package. However, when I tried to get one a couple of weeks ago they did not have any in stock and had no idea of when they would get them again. Both of the packages that are needed for Dish are sold under the package numbers: RPSK-11 and RPS-21 . Those two items are needed to convert from DirecTV Trav'ler to Dish Trav'ler

My Trav'ler is locking nicely on the Dish sats on the western arc.

Well, I had to start some where. Parts and pricing where direct from Winegard CS. My coach was built and delivered in 2016 so I have the old four bolt style mount for the Direct TV reflector. Pricing was given for converting to the new style two bolt two clip reflector that is currently used.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem spending 50$ or so for a new reflector. But what I do have a problem with is buying the same olé piece of junk that I currently have on my roof only to have it fail again....

Thanks for the part numbers and help Gary.

Here's my understanding as explained by SAS Satellite: As Gary stated Winegard is back ordered on parts, Authorized installers " MAY " be getting preference but even they can't get all they want. Scott ordered 5 but was only allowed 2 at this time !

My original 2 DirecTV reflectors were the 4 bolt style but the last 1 was the 2 bolt style which required converting the mount. I know of no better quality reflectors made by anyone so maybe Paul your only choice is the $50 Amazon purchase. Why wait weeks and spend more money to get it from Winegard !

Another thought would be to do the bolt/fender washer Mod to your existing reflector and HOPE for the best. Not much to lose !

I’m going to do the modification first before I buy a new junky reflector. I found them here.

I just can’t see buying junk to replace junk!

The good news is there was virtually NO CHANGE IN SIGNAL STRENGTH. I took readings on two random transponders before and after. The results are at the link below if you are interested in the details. Transponder 19 is standard signal, Transponder 5 is a Spotbeam signal on 119 and 129:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

I used 1/4" x 1-1/4" SS washers and 1/4" (coarse) x 1" SS Pan head phillips screws and reused the factory nut. 1/4" x 3/4" log SS pan head screws would be better, the 1" are a bit longer than needed.

I also put a filler washer in the mounting bolt recess to provide some additional support. I happened to have some plastic spacers on hand that were the exact diameter and thickness needed, but it can be done by stacking some metal washers as well.

Frankly, I think some of us thought that maybe someething else had caused the problem (a limb or something), and my memory is that he replaced the reflector dish and it happened again. Memories are vague.

Well, I now know that he was spot on with his concern.

I recently completed a transfer from DirecTV which I could no longer live with due to their completely incapable customer service for a motorcoach and switch to Dish Network in hopes that they are a much more customer service company than DirecTV. So needed to replace the whole LMB and arm to Dish's version of those items, in addition to DishNetworks version of the reflector. Its an easy conversion if you get the complete written manual on how to do this from Winegard.

However, when I headed to the roof to make this swap of equipment, I discovered that one of the only 2 screws that hold the reflector had completely severed from the the steel reflector. The picture at the bottom of this post will show this clearly. One of the screw holes had broken away from the rest of the dish material about a half inch circular section of steel. In fact, if you look closely, the steel had broken free long enough ago that the metal edge had started to rust.

Now, a DirecTV reflector is really held on by only 2 screws (not 4) There are two anchor screws in the top of the anchor plate for the reflector and instead of screws at the bottom 2 positions, there are metal tabs punched out of the reflector that go into 2 slots at the bottom of the mount. Now, if both top screws are firmly in place and the metal has not separated, there would still be significant ability of the reflector to vibrate a small amount from the onrush of air when collapsed and moving down the highway. One of my screws held the hole thing in place and its clear that it would eventually fail just like it's twin. I called Winegard about this while I got instructions for the conversion and was told "Well, that is a known issue with reflectors that we get from DirecTV.... we have had no similar problems with the reflectors that we buy from Dish Network..... Great, right?

The Dish Network reflector in contrast bolts firmly to the support bracket with 4 larger screws through 4 identical depressions in the reflector. The bolts have black flat heads and square top areas on the bolt threads so the bolts will seat in only one way. Tighten everything down tight. There is also a pix of the 4 bolt Dish reflector mounted

So, I am publicly apologizing to the owner who posted about his two reflectors mysteriously flying away while going down the road.... I now understand that you were simply dealing with a known defect in the DirecTV reflectors. And anyone who has a factory installed OEM DirecTV Trav'ler on their roof needs to check their reflector several times a year as failures appear to be common. You too may find your reflector mysteriously missing from your turret.

Gary
I had the same issue also, and it got hung up on the roof. Crazy!!
