Dynamic Pricing
Came upon a campground that uses "Dynamic Pricing" for their daily/weekly/monthly pricing. It was explained to me, this morning, that the rate is determined by the fullness of the park and will fluctuate daily. Less campers price down....More campers price goes up!
Has anyone run into this during their travels? When we made our reservations this was not mentioned to us. Is this the way campgrounds are going?
No complaints here, just looking to see if this is the way the camping industry is going. I don't think I'm going to like it if this is the future of campgrounds......
Thanks......

So do you get to adjust how much you pay them by how much fun you have? Sounds fair
I've never heard of such a pricing structure and would not stay there based on their nonsense.

Paul, it looks like a new twist to an already used system. Peak travel season, the price increases. Snowbird season in SW FL. $800. a month in the summer, $3,000 a month in the winter.
I won't even go into Bike Week in the Black Hills

Well, don't think this is the case. I understand peak season charges, but this dynamic pricing according to the campground is being used year round by them. We're use to calling a campground and getting the daily or weekly rates. Now it appears that these rates will change depending on how many sites are open, hence the name "Dynamic". You could call today and get one rate and tomorrow the rate could change. Now I understand why the campground is not full and the ones around it are.....

Sounds just like the airline model. What's next, an extra charge to use the restroom?

From what I have seen in the past couple of years with record breaking RV sales, they all are looking for a place to park, low fuel costs, and due to the economy crash, very few new RV parks have been built. I would not be surprised if we do not see more "creative" rental practices to get more money out of the RV Park investment.
I heard for a forum member the other day that the SW FL RV parks are now renting for 3 weeks instead of a month during snowbird season. Is that so they can get the monthly rate for 3 weeks, and get an extra months worth on income during snowbird season? Nice trick.

I ran into the dynamic pricing at a park in the Hoodsport area of Western Washington. It was a very nice park in the woods and they gave me a paper that showed all the price points based on vacancy rates and time of the year. I thanked them and moved on. BTW - this was over Labor Day weekend and the park was less than half full, but the price of a site was more than I wanted to spend.

So a point in time question, if you call and make a reservation are you locked in with a rate based on reservations they have in hand at that "point in time" or will the rate be based on the population of the park on the day you show up at the park?
I could see the first scenario working to drive potential campers to reserve early and allow the RV park to forecast staffing, revenue and occupancy....that is the airline model, after all.
If it is the second scenario, I do not think people are going to respond well.

We stopped in the area of St. Augustine Florida for some sight seeing. The campground is Compass RV park and is about half full or maybe a little less than half. All other campgrounds in the area were full and could not accommodate us....
I don't think you need to avoid this park. It's a nice park but I feel that they were not up front with us when we called....Now I've got another question on my list of questions to ask when calling ahead for campground accomadations.

Hi guys - Yup, this is new to us also. Hope this isn't the new thing to camping. If it is, then we'll have to find something new. We'll be arriving next week after a little time on the beach and hopefully some riding in the area.
See ya soon!

Hotels do it all the time and many campgrounds have seasonal rates, so I guess maybe it is not that crazy an idea.

Dynamic pricing is indeed on it's way. Will be very much like the model the airlines used including non-refundable reservations. The intent is to drive people to make reservations early and stick to them. Read all about it in Greg Gerbers article OPINION: Coming soon, airline pricing models for campgrounds | RV Daily Report
