First service

When should the first service be performed on a new coach? (Oil, filters, ect.)

Not sure if that fancy 600HP ISX is different than the 450 ISL in the Anthem or Aspire, but the first service interval on the 450 ISL is at 12 mos/20,000. I did my first change at 10,000, but some Cummins pundits said that was unnecessary. I ran a oil sample for analysis just to make sure everything was okay.

The basic answer is every 12 mos/20,000, no different for first oil change.

That is absolutely right on the ISL and ISX but the generator oil and filter should be changed the first time at 50 hours, then go to the longer hours.

Given the numerous systems that require upkeep with different intervals (engine, transmission, chassis, generator, batteries, aqua hot etc) I find it useful to keep a log. I also keep a record of the part numbers (OEM and NAPA/Wix cross reference) for easy access.

Yeah, no kidding. I was on my first trip in the new Anthem and timed out my 50 hrs on the Genny before I got home!

Thanks all. I called Spartan and they said 1yr 15,000. Need to grease the driveshaft and cooling fan inserts every 3 months or 5,000. I did the one year 20,000 on the Anthem, but didn't know about the drive shaft and cooling fan. Also serviced the generator @ 50 hours then 150 hours after.

Grease the drive shaft and cooling fan every 3 months???????? Ok, I will ask - how exactly do you do that? I've googled it and looks to me like the vehicle needs to be on jacks to do it. How do y'all do it?

I was lucky, the delivery drivers had 46 hours on mine when we took delivery...ordered a auto drain plug and changed the oil before our first trip. Worked out great, the genny was broke in and tested for problems for me.

When they replaced the U joints in my last Spartan chassis MH the mechanics said the drive shaft U joints should be greased every 5,000 miles or 3 months. I use to grease everything at every oil change, but I found out that is not often enough for the U joints. Wouldn't you know it they went out in the Upper Peninsula and had to have new ones overnighted in.....that wasn't cheap. I now carry a small hand grease gun just for the U joints.

Grease Gun with 3 Oz. Grease

If I need to raise the MH I use the leveling jacks and a couple of jack stands if I am going to be under there for a while. It only takes a minute to do the U joints and fan with this little grease gun.

Wow. I don't even know what a u joint is. I'm so screwed. Should have stayed with a Freightliner chassis :-(. Wonder if my RV mechanic can do it for me every 3 months? I'll call him and see. If so, then add another couple of hundred for that per year. Bummer.

I'll bet the Freightliner drive shafts has the same U joints. Any Walmart auto service center, (plenty of RV parking), can lube the U joints for you. I don't lube mine while sitting in storage, so the 3 months only applies if traveling and the drive shaft is spinning. I do shoot the drive shaft U joints with fresh grease when leaving storage for a long trip.

Nice thing about Walmart they even have the small grease gun inside if the shop only has an air hose type that will not reach to the MH.

I think I recently tossed out my grease gun. Darn. Interestingly, when last at Spartan, the tech told me that when he lubed everything, it was apparent that this was not needed (the lube that came out was perfectly clear). I'm sure that 3 months and 5000 miles had passed.
