First Trip And a Are You Kidding Me!

The are you kidding me part - Heading back home and about 50 miles from home we are approaching an overpass over the interstate, and I see 4 teenagers standing on the overpass. I immediately tell my wife please don't let them throw a rock. As we passed under the overpass I hear it, a rock hitting over the passenger side on the roof. My wife said it hit then bounced and struck the windshield. My wife said the rock was golf ball size.

There was a rest area about half a mile from the overpass, so we pulled in and called 911 and told them what had happened to us. There doesn't appear to be any damage to the windshield, but I will not know anything about the top of the front cap until I can get up on the roof. Luckily I have covered storage, and work at a RV dealership. Will take it in Saturday for some other issues and have them inspect the entire roof in case other rocks were thrown that we might not have heard.

The first trip was to Nawlins' for some Mardi Gras parades. Stayed at Pontchatrain Landing and had a great time. Coach performed very well with a few exceptions. I do not have the quietest best handling coach period, at least right now. The wind noise is horrible from both sides of the windshield. Sounds like someone whistling right in your ear constantly. I also have a bad vibration at speeds between 35-65. I also have the same popping noise as Matt D and the fellow from Las Vegas who made the video. If it wasn't for those 3 issues I would have been extremely happy as the rest of the coach performed flawlessly.

We received several compliments on the coach and overall we are happy with it's performance first trip out. Very small punch list as far as I am concerned. Smallest of all my coaches so far.

I think all of us have had nightmares on exactly what you experienced.... I know that I have ..... I have never found anything that I think would really help.... except I now have a dash cam which is working all the time, and I would have a picture of the teenagers up on the bridge to show the police when they arrive. The other thing is that I would lay on the air horn and hopefully scare the crap out of the guy with the rock to mis-time his missile or miss completely. Those kids were probably walking and would still be visible by any sheriff deputy or state cop that cruised the road near the overpass.... Hope you had no damage.

Brian, that stinks. Probably the biggest negative of driving a private coach is you become a very large target for anyone having a bad day.

Pretty hard to dodge a rock in traffic without causing an accident.

Probably the only reasonable thing is to just get on the binders and hope for the best. If you see them a ways off maybe a friendly wave might throw their malicious intent off balance.

I'm glad to state our side window was perfectly quiet last weekend. I hope it lasts as we are on window #3 since August. I plan to peel window #2 apart and use a proper adhesive to rebuild it.

Can you describe the vibration?

-Matt

A client of mines wife was driving on a hwy around dusk 20 years ago, and kids on an overpass threw a bundle of newspapers (obviously stolen) off. They crashed through the windshield and crushed her chest. Coroner said she was dead before her car crashed.
Now you see overpasses on hwys in some states that have fencing that encloses part of the walkway so you can't throw objects off the top.

Matt,

The vibration is felt in the front of the coach and the steering wheel. I suspect a suspension issue or tires out of balance. It did this slightly on the way home from picking it up, and got progressively worse on our recent trip. I initially suspected the tires may have had a small flat spot and would work itself out with our trip. I am now wondering if the popping noise on turns and bumps is not generator related, but rather a suspension issue.

I have a video of the steering wheel shaking, but couldn't find a way to attach the video. If you want to see it PM me your e-mail address and I will send it that way.

V/R,
Brian
