Fuel mileage

Can anyone tell me what rpm and at what speed they get the best fuel mileage? I'm getting 7.2 mpg at 1500 rpm which is about 67 mph. 2016 Cornerstone

Fuel mileage

Better than I am averaging. I normally set the cruise at 62-65.

My older ISX is at 7.6 mpg over 47,000 miles. Turning 1350 @ 60 mph although I usually run about 62 mph. As you know they will comfortably go faster but I choose to go what I'm comfortable with in regards to our speed laws here (60 mph truck limit in WA state).

That's way better than I am getting, and I usually cruise around 65 @1400 -1500 rpm, and I have a pretty light foot.

I was getting at best 6.7 mpg running 65 mph. After having the Cummins computer updates done, my mileage went up to 7.3 average which I am pleased with. This is on a 450, might check with Cummins if there are any updates due on yours. Your mileage on a 650 sounds better than most.

What Brobox said. We had a Cummins update done while at the factory last fall. Mileage went up significantly. While I was delivering it to the new owner the dash was saying 8.0

I set my cruise control at 62 and lifetime (31,000 miles), calculated mileage on my ISL is 7.2 which includes Aquahot and generator use. Right now my dash number is 9.1. Still have a fuel cost/mile of $0.46.

I also experienced the better mileage from the Cummins update on my anthem... also the power up hills dramatically was better .
I just racked up 900 miles this last weekend and computer said 7.3 the whole time.. pulling a 4 door Jeep by tow bar.
Not pulling I have seen the 8 number a few times...

Is there a way to tell if you need the update? Our local Cummins service center is a real PITA.

Vance, just call Cummins 800 # with your engine serial number. It can be found on the ID sticker behind the drivers seat. My ECM took 13 updates, it runs like a 450 should now instead of a 300. I had a hard time pulling the passes in CO and the fuel mileage was 5.7.
If you have the update done at a Coach Care facility they can check for any Spartan updates and some can do the Spartan computer updates as well. They are a nice places to spend the night before or after the updates are done.

I set my cruise at 63 mph, that is the best (fuel mileage) for me. For me, it's about the journey and being safe than fuel mileage as I drag a 25ft car hauler.

I have a 2013 Anthem and the last trip from California to Florida Keys and back pulling a Buick Enclave I averaged 9.2 for the full trip. I have a silverleaf system plugged directly into the chassis that monitors everything and that is what reported the mileage

I drive between 62 to 64 with cruise and economy mode on

Generator averages 1/2 gallon per hour which was not included in the mileage. Coach had 46,000 miles

I also keep the tires in check every 30 days which I think helps

I am getting 8 - 65-67, all new Cummins updates. Seems to like those long drive. Drops quick in the mountains.

To maximize your fuel economy set your cruise control at 2 to 3 mph faster than your 6th gear shift point. This will run your engine at the slowest possible speed in sixth gear. Use the cruise control as much as possible. If you want to improve more inflate your tires to the maximum psi given on the side wall. This will give you the least rolling resistance that your tires can deliver. Your ride quality and tire wear may be affected though. Buy your fuel early in the mornings and drive in the hottest part of the day. The colder the fuel is, the more you get in each gallon. The meters on the pumps are not temperature compensated. Then drive during the heat of the day to give you less dense air which lowers your aerodynamic drag. And finally always plan your trips to have a tail wind and go down hill as much as possible.

Caterpillar published a brochure years ago about motor coach fuel economy that stated for each mph over 60 you will lose 0.1 mpg. I believe that is still a good rule of thumb today.

In 2014 when fuel was at $4.00 a gallon I practiced all of the above to minimize my fuel expense. At todays price I run whatever speed is comfortable to hold my position in the right lane with the trucks and enjoy driving my magnificent machine. I gave up measuring gallons used vs miles driven because of the Aquahot and generator fuel consumption is unknown and my dash reading is stuck on 7.5 mpg accumulative average.

All this said, when you only drive a few thousand miles a year in a 1/2 million dollar coach, does it really matter?
