Fuel Mileage

We spent the past 2 weeks at Charlotte/Middlebury.

We left yesterday, and I used the opportunity to do my best to track mileage comparing the dash to actual.

Points:
1) both fuel islands were very level
2) both fill-ups were during fairy cool weather (morning then evening)
3) both times I went to the last click on the pump to slow the delivery (minimize foaming) with ~10 gallons remaining
4) I drove 64, except through city zones and road-work sites (slowing was minimal due to weekend...)
5) we stopped at 3 rest areas, and once at a truck wash
6) we towed our light car (~3100 lbs)

The dash showed 8.8 mpg. We drove 576 miles, and the refill took 65.3 gallons - 8.82 mpg.

Certainly not a perfect test, but as close as I could get it... Thanks,

BG

The only way I will ever see 8.8 is to read your post. It does cost when you go heavier. Every time I go up in grade of MH's my fuel mileage goes down.

Iím not familiar with your rig. What size motor do you have? Diesel? 350, 450, etc?

Mileage is impacted by driving style, terrain, and winds.

We spend a lot of time going up and down big mountains, so I quit worrying a while back.

I flight plan for 6 MPG in the mountains, and 7.5 MPG on flat terrain.

Ordinarily those numbers are pretty close.

Since I left Fl this spring I have driven 5161 miles and used 651 gallons of fuel. That includes about 60% interstate or 4 lane US highways and 4-5 8 to 11500 ft passes in the Colorado Rockies.
The above is a paper and pencil record of every mile and gallon of fuel. My figures show mileage at 7.9 which I think is pretty good with pulling a full size pickup. Hopefully the new Cornerstone will do as well.

To answer a couple of questions:

Our engine is an L9 - 450 hp, 1250 lb ft torque. And for sure, terrain definitely affects mileage - I chose that route as it's fairly flat and consistent (4-lane+).

Other factors would include weight - although to me our coach is fairly well loaded, our total weight comes in <42K, the alignment was checked, and it's spot-on, the tire pressure is set according to our 6-corner weight, etc...

I mainly did the tracking to see if the gauge and "measured" mileage would be close. Again, my testing wasn't perfect, but it was as close as I could get it - I was surprised to see the 2 computation methods end up so close... Thanks,

BG

I get a steady 7.7 no matter where or how I drive.

Buddy, Rollin,

I need to be towed by either of you when I travel...

I still see 6.7 on my readout 1.5 years later, and I feel I drive conservatively! Recalling an old thread referencing fuel mileage, unless you can do a i.e. 1,000 mile run with "NO" A/C, generator, or A/H use as you travel it would be difficult to calculate your true mileage. I do like going down a grade though....99 mpg!

I've just put on 1,806.3 miles on this trip to upper peninsula and have used 253.3 gallons of diesel. Now, I have run the AquaHot some as the nights have been cool, but mostly used the heat pumps and I used the A/C units and the 12.5 KW Onan for a whole day while we were getting out of Louisiana and making our way north. For this trip, 1,806.3 miles / 253.3 gallons, (with Onan and AquaHot unknown volume), mileage = 7.13 on a Cummins X-15 605 hp engine, speed at ~ 68 mph as much as possible, otherwise always below legal speed. Take out the genny and the AquaHot and I am probably right around 7.5mpg running. I am reasonably happy with that for this big engine .....

During my 5100 miles so far this year there was very little Aquahot and no generator run time. My dash readout and the old pencil ďcalculatorĒ and paper are usually pretty close.
I also enter the gallons, mileage and price into the fuel and mileage log in the gps rv tools section each time I fuel.

Same process here except that I am old fashion.... I get receipts and record mileage and take data from the dash and keep all that information in a paper log, and then when home, transfer it all into a big Excel database so data is readily available. I also record genny run time, Cummins run time, and of course take notes and document all problems/solutions/cost/amount of head banging that I have to go through to figure it out.... ....

My Anthem has 78,000 miles and we just finished a 11,000 mile trip from Southern California to Newfoundland. I pull a 2016 Lincoln MKZ and averaged right at 9 mpg. My sweet spot is running around 68 mph. If I run slower my mileage gets worse. I think that is because I broke it in running those speeds.

Best I have ever got was 9.5. The more miles I put on the better the coach runs
