Generator will not start

I am dry camping and the generator will not start.
I have good oil and coolant levels, house batteries are over 12v, and I have tried with the main engine running and using the booster switch.
The generator is not cranking and has an error code 3, (service required).

This is on a 2012 aspire.

Ideas please.

Thanks

Glen

I have no clue off the top of my head what an error code 3 means (but Onan manuals are up on the net in many places and I bet you can Google search for the manual and find it out quickly. There have been several recent threads about Onan problems (RubiconTrail started the most recent). Look back and it should be near. His problem was a failed fuel pump (riser pump?) which he swapped out in the desert of Arizona.

I have a manual and will look at my on-computer literature and see if I see that error code for my 12.5 which is probably the same. There have also been problems with shorted connectors on the Onan....

I assume you have some type of Onan?

IMO it's good news that it's not cranking at all.

You can find the service manual and great troubleshooting charts here;

I looked at my Onan manual that I have on-board for the 12.5 and copied the section on codes..... here it is....

Fault Codes The genset controller provides extensive diagnostics by causing the status indicator light on the Control Switch to blink in a coded fashion. Following a fault shutdown, the indicator light will repeatedly blink 2, 3 or 4 blinks at a time. • Two blinks indicates a low oil pressure fault. • Three blinks indicates a service fault. Press Stop once to cause the two-digit, second-level fault code to blink. (Pressing Stop again will stop the blinking.)The two-digit code consists of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 blinks, a brief pause, and then 1 to 9 blinks. The first set of blinks represents the tens digit and the second set of blinks the units digit of the fault code number. For example, Fault Code No. 36 appears as: blink-blink-blink—pause—blink-blink-blink-blink-blink-blink— long pause— repeat • Four blinks indicates that cranking exceeded 30 seconds without the engine starting. Note: Fault Code Nos. 3 and 4 are fi rst level faults. Avoid interpreting them as second-level Fault Code Nos. 33 and 44, which have not been assigned as fault codes.

Restoring Fault Code Blinking – The fault code stops blinking after fi ve minutes (15 minutes, Series HGJAA). Press Stop three times within fi ve seconds to restore blinking. Note that the last fault logged will blink, even after the condition that caused the shutdown has been corrected.

The secondary code is 32, battery power.
I am dealing with ec, they think it is the starting relay (they said it was a common problem).

I am still working on it

The manual that I keep on board does not have the actual list of codes to the best of my knowledge. Do you have a link to that list you found so I can add it to my traveling reference library?

If the engine is not cranking at all, the error code may be bogus. It may only be a stuck starter. Try tapping it with a hammer if you can get to it. Connect a volt meter to the starter wires while someone hits the switch, if no power to the starter, then it's probably the relay. If power is going to the starter and its not turning, the starter is bad.

Hi Gary,

I tried to upload the manual into IRV2, but it's 7MB. The previous owner of my Classic printed it out and stored it in my Entegra Binder.

I've converted my printout, into a PDF, so if you'd like to PM me with your personal email address, i'll try to send the PDF to you (and anyone else that wants it), via my gmail account.

Cheers

Update
Ec said it was the starting relay (they did not know the part number), I found one at a parts store and put it in and it started, so I turned it off, put things back together and it would not start.
I checked for another relay but was not able to find any.
I had a call into Cummings and they don't have an answer for the probe other that the relay and thy to check power levels. I did get a part number for the relay sa I will thy to find another one tomorrow. This may drastically cut our trip short, but we will be at Hilton Head.

Plus let me know any other ideas that you have and thanks for the ones that have been sent.

Glen

Check the grounds on all connections. If it works one time and not the next, ground it the first question.
