Morning John,

Are awning are able to take a light rain, but we don't recommend you keep your awning extended in inclement weather.
On the lead rail, you should have a weep hole on both ends of the awning. I have attached some information for you to review. If you are in need of any service please let me know.

So I take it there is only a motion sensor in the front rail from what he said or is there 1 in the rear also

There is one in each awning. And there are a raft of integrated awnings over the last several years since the manufacturers went to the integrated awnings and made Girard's day (and Girard switched to the motion sensor from the anemometer in late 2012 I think), that don't have the hole and need the fix.
